Blyevan must have been a really really bad person in a previous life. I cannot believe didnt get the needed votes to get in this time with the type of class we had on the ballot.

McGwire got 10 more votes this year than last I read.

Alomar and Larkin will get in there eventually.

Blylevan shouldnt still be waiting on the call.

Bert will get in next season, I would say. Next year's class is weaker than this year's was with Larry Walker and Jeff Bagwell being the best of the bunch.

Thought Blyleven and Alomar would be sure ins.

Maybe for those 5 voters, they just pulled the names out of a hat and went with that one.

Question, could they potentially be a year where no body gets voted in?

Re: Dawson only member of Hall.

I honestly am surprised that Edgar Martinez didn't get more votes. There are so many numbers that show he should be in the Hall. No matter if he didn't play defense.

Something that really bothers me is the whole deal of getting 15 years to get in. You know what would fix this whole voting mess? Yea I know it's crazy. Give em one shot. They get in or they don't. Then it's up to the Veterans Committee.

Why do I propose this? Because it eliminates this bullshit of writers not voting for guys cuz they don't think he's a "first ballot Hall of Famer." What the **** does that mean?

Peter Abraham had a great tweet the other day. "You know, I'm glad Andre Dawson got the respect he deserved this year. He really had an underrated 2008 season." COME ON! A guy is either a Hall of Famer or he's not. Nothing changes in the years they're on the ballot. And if you give them one shot, it would make sure the writers take a good hard look at who's on the ballot, and would eliminate the stupid mindset of "well, I think he was a hall of famer, but only a 5th ballot hall of famer, so I'll wait until then to vote for him." It's absolute horseshit. I really feel for a guy like Bert Blylevin. He has to stress over this every year for up to 15 years! Give the guys a break! They're in, or they're not. They're a Hall of Famer, or they're not.

Bottom line: Andre Dawson is a HoF'er. Bert Blylevin is a HoF'er. Alomar is a HoF'er. Larkin is a HoF'er. Martinez is a HoF'er (in my opinion at least). And the fact that it takes a guy like Andre Dawson 9 freakin years to get in is absurd.

Also, a side note, the player should pick their hat, not the Hall.

I disagree. Then we'd have some players picking pork pie hats and such.

I agree with this in principal and theory but I wouldn't want to do it because it wouldn't work.

Those same idiots would just say "all well" and not vote for them and let the veteran's committee take over.

We can't let anyone but the best of the best in on the first ballot!

I'd say the issue is that the HoF is getting so watered down. I'm sorry, I mean, Edgar Martinez was a VERY VERY talented player. But he's not HoF worthy in my mind. A .312 BA, 300 HR, 500 2B, and a career OPS+ of 147 are great, don't get me wrong, but they're not the upper upper echelon that the HoF SHOULD be about. Also, him not playing defensively takes a lot away from him.

But anyway, my point is that we shouldn't feel the need to elect someone every year. Guys like Martinez deserve some kind of recognition, but the point of the HoF is to recognize the far superior players. Guys like Ruth, Mays, and Aaron are being honored the same way that Jim Rice and Bruce Sutter are. And again, Sutter and Rice were good players, but not in the top top level. So, I would propose we create a museum for the "popular and talented" players, but the HoF should be for like....the superiorly dominant players.

I also don't buy the first ballot thing. I understand it. I just think that the thought process is that they need to elect at least one person every year, and if they elect the borderline players immediately, then they won't have people to say "oh, well, there's no one else decent eligible this year, let's elect them" about....

Martinez played very solid defense at 3B before all the injuries. But name all the hitters that have a .300 BA/.400 OBP/.500 SLG in this careers. The guy has an award named after him. If any DH deserves to be in its him.

Yeah, problem is he only played like 3 seasons worth of defense. And I agree that if any DH should be in, it's probably him....and I guess he's closer than I originally thought, but I don't see him as a HoF caliber player. He was a great player, but to me, the HoF is for that RARE RARE breed.

I always liked Martinez, dating back to hoping he'd beat Bernie Williams in the RBI race that one season. I just don't know about the HoF...

He was also held back for a couple of years because of Jim freaking Presley at 3B. He did play some 1B when it got to interleague. But Paul Molitor is in and compare their numbers. He was DH for a long time as well.

    Edit:
    DH- 1412 games
    3B- 563
    1B- 28

    For his career.

I dunno, I'm not so big on Molitor either. The one thing Molitor has though, is 3000 hits....and he's well over 3000 hits, while Martinez was at like 2200. Martinez had a better career than I thought, but I was never big on DH's in the HoF.....its nothing personal, haha
