    always

Even sometimes when it's brown. Can't afford to flush it down.

I'm sure 90% of people who complained about the wasting of water.... Don't worry about it when they are taking a shower or washing their clothes.. Lame.

And in the end people with ALS can't shower for quite some time depending how long they live. So the "wasting water" theory will even out.

but that's the future, when the water is needed now. They're still bathed and such though now, no? And on top of it, the challenge has morphed from just ALS (if it ever was as such) to just whatever charity.

It's the future and now. And past. Many many people have ALS. So they aren't using water right now. Then the people diagnosed in future won't be using it then.

Depends. My dad had catheter and feeding tube. Wasn't allowed in water. We wiped him down with rag. Obviously a lot less water then a shower or a bath.

If it's bringing in money for ALS research then...fantastic.

Many people are still doing it for all the wrong reasons, though. Namely those that are doing it in the sense of "donate or dump ice water on yourself". That kind of sends the wrong message of "I'd rather dump ice cold water on me than donate to your cause".

If/when I do this (I'm only going to do it if I can think of a creative way that doesn't just rehash what millions of others are doing) I'll do it and donate...and I'll likely donate either way.

The reason I was initially cynical, though, is because it fits the same dynamics of all the other useless social media activist nonsense we always see like the "Kony 2012" and equals sign profile pictures and stuff like that. But at least this one is creating a real benefit.

Are those other social media things useless though? I mean, they at least started by someone's desire to draw attention to something they felt strongly about and to try to effect change via whatever means they could. The results may not be immediately tangible or large, if ever, but there's no way of knowing that beforehand.

Good intentions doesn't make it useful.

Ok, I'm aware of Kony now....if there's nothing I can personally do about it what use is it?

As for the equals sign, I'm sure everybody in this country is aware of that issue.

Your post didn't say anything about useful, though useful can be defined in a few ways, just a benefit. And often drawing attention to a cause can produce a benefit. It's not unreasonable to think all the equals signs caused someone to really think about and question their beliefs about same sex relationships that could produce a huge change down the road. Or spurred someone into that field in terms of counseling our outreach or other type of assistance. A person who may not otherwise have been there.

There's nothing you can or did do about Kony, but maybe that influenced someone to get into international human rights issues. It's no different than any other tactic or campaign someone or a group of people do to raise awareness of something, like amnesty International's no speaking as an example and awareness has benefits too, even if it doesn't fill a bank account.

And that doesn't even get into the extremely personal micro level as I know a couple who met because of LGBT awareness in which one of them was kind of pushed towards that because, yes, the silly equal signs piqued his interest.
