It's cause gas pumps check if it's a real card (hence the $1 authorization). The actual charge is processed later in the station itself, I believe.

But why is it everywhere else can charge the right amount right away?

I assume it's not because gas stations are the only establishments that check if the card is authentic.

We got free internet for the entire downtown area (albeit small) and the airport.
Yet I go to Montreal, and nothing at the airport. But they got some sweet bikes on the side of the road that I can rent.

I'm standing line at the customer service desk at the local grocery store, couple people in front of me, couple people behind when this assclown walks up to another part of the desk like he's waiting on service with this confused look on his face why nobody's helping him.

Then, sure enough, people start lining up behind this guy wondering why the "line" isn't moving.

People who whine about "privacy issues" on facebook. Most of the time it's a bunch of hoopla over a feature that you have to choose to use.

For instance, the current craze is whining about this "places" feature that shows where you are if you use the feature and "check in".

Of course the part in itallics is left out in the chain statuses whining about it. They can't make it sound like big brother is conspiring with facebook to track our every move if they mention that you have to use the feature before it displays anything.

While I'm on the subject of facebook, the "it's complicated" option for relationship status.

You're either in a relationship or you're not. This "it's complicated" nonsense, I suppose, is supposed to suggest that you're relationship is a bit rocky? So, it's basically an option to air your personal dirty laundry?
