    Extension For Peavy Nearing!!

Pads near three-year extension with Peavy

The Padres, in what could be a watershed moment in franchise history, have made significant progress toward signing right-hander Jake Peavy to a three-year contract extension.

"We're moving closer," Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod, told FOXSports.com.

The deal, which would lock up Peavy through 2012, will average between $17 million and $17.5 million per season, according to a major-league source. It also could include a club option for a fourth year.

The commitment to Peavy would be by far the largest in club history, surpassing the four-year, $34 million contract that the Padres awarded Phil Nevin in 2001.

Axelrod declined comment on specific dollar figures, but said that Peavy's average annual value would be lower than that of Carlos Zambrano and Barry Zito.

Zambrano is averaging $18.3 million per season in the five-year, $91.5 million extension that he negotiated with the Cubs last season.

Zito is averaging $18 million per season in the seven-year, $126 million free-agent deal that he signed with the Giants as a free agent last off-season.

Peavy, the unanimous winner of the National League Cy Young award last season, will earn $6 million next season. The Padres hold an $8 million option on him for 2009.

Good to know that Peavy isn't going to New York, Boston, or Atlanta anytime soon.

Amazing how I was the only one who thought the Padres could lock him up and here they might. Stoner strikes again!! The Padres finally make a smart move this offseason which should be encouraging for Pads fan even if they did get Wolf and Tomko.

You were hardly the "only one" that thought they could lock him up

What a moronic thing to say in a Padres forum

There was a whole thread where I was defending the Padres getting him Everyone else was very doubtful!! I was the only one that they could and would. Sad but true

Not saying that he will ask for that, or even close to that, but to say they should "show loyalty" and equate that to giving him whatever he asks for implies that they're not being "loyal" if he were to ask for that and they were to subsequently turn it down....as they should if he asked for that.

I think the Padres can display "loyalty" to Jake Peavy without giving him anything and everything he asks for.
The Padres will have to pay him what he is worth. He is worth a lot and rightfully so. Like I said, loyalty goes both ways. Peavy will probably show his by asking for the same deal Zito/Zambrano got. Since the Pads have first shot, they should show theirs and give him a deal. It's not like they are going to go get that big bat, they haven't in years. If Peavy wants a good deal, the Padres should do whatever it takes to give it to him. If he wants to go tests the market to get the most outrageous deal, then let him be. $18 mil/yr should be enough to keep him locked up. The Padres are soon to lose their franchise player (Hoffman) and Peavy is the only one that can fill that void. .

    Everyone ??

Links, and quotes proving your accusations please ?

Here is a post of mine from 11/16
IMO dumping the final two years of his deal and giving him a raise while adding 3 years to the end of it might be the kid of thing they are doing......something like 5/75 essentially locking him up til 2012......
Hell this might even be damn near on the money.....

Sure looks to me like I thought we could/should keep him.......In fact I challenge you to find a single post of me saying we shouldn't or couldn't keep Peavy........I doubt you can........

Everyone was a bit skeptical but that doesn't mean anyone was writing it off like as though we didn't think it could happen.

You are hardly the only guy who thought it could happen.

No need for I told you so's LTR, it serves no purpose other than to incite pointless argument.

    Re: Extension For Peavy Nearing!!

Yes Pads' post came months after my post so it looks like some might have changed their tune. Congrats!! You agreed with me! Everyone was skeptical in the much earlier thread and thought Peavy was out and I was the one who actually had faith in Padres FO. No one said they "shouldn't" but many of you either thought they wouldn't or couldn't. Go read for yourself. No need for an argument because there isn't one. And Pads was not one that disagreed so to say everyone was wrong.
