Look at the team that won the NLCS and that crushed your playoff hopes. They won on offense, defense and pitching. They are now the team to beat in the West and should only get better.

From what I've been hearing, don't be surprised if Tony Gwynn Jr. is the guy the Padres end up trading for. He's going to be a much cheaper option than Coco Crisp as far as a trade goes as well as Rowand and Jones in terms of money.

The team who won the WS, had the second highest payroll.
Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks Antonelli isn't ready. Best chance to compete is getting a Loretta.Padres GM Kevin Towers feels his team can handle its vacancy at second base "internally," with Matt Antonelli, Craig Stansberry, Luis Rodriguez and Oscar Robles all candidates for the job.
We still believe he's just trying to establish a better negotiating position. The Pads can get a solid stopgap cheap, whether it's Tadahito Iguchi, Mark Loretta or possibly Felipe Lopez. There's little reason to think Antonelli is ready now, and the Padres were unwilling to give Stansberry a chance after his great start in Triple-A last year. Rodriguez and Robles are utilitymen and not very good ones.
If you missed the whole point I've been trying to make, you don't need to be the highest payroll to win.
In order, here are the top 10 teams in Payroll in 2007 and how they finished....
1. Yankees $189,639,045 - Lost to Indians in 1st round
2. Boston $143,026,214 - World Series Champions
3. NY Mets $115,231,663 - no playoffs
4. LA Angels $109,251,333 - Lost to Boston in 1st round
5. White Sox $108,671,833 - no playoffs
6. Dodgers 108,454,524 - no playoffs
7. Mariners $106,460,833 - no playoffs
8. Cubs $99,670,332 - no playoffs
9. Tigers $95,180,369 - no playoffs
10. Orioles $93,554,808 - no playoffs
So, let's check that list. Only 3 of the Top 10 payroll teams made the playoffs, of which, 2 were eliminated in the 1st round.
So, again, my point is, you don't need $100M payrolls to win.

The Padres won't likely pursue a veteran second baseman. "We think we can fill our second base hole internally," Towers said. That means rookie Matt Antonelli and Luis Rodriguez will be the frontrunners heading into Spring Training, though Oscar Robles and Craig Stansberry are in the mix, as well.

I guess I need to go back and put things in bold![]()
Looks like the Padres are ready to offer Jenkins a deal which means the Pads will have to find more offense somewhere. Padres are about to give Greene a mulit year deal.
Actually the Cubs did make the playoffs.
Tigers, Dodgers and Mets were all in the playoffs last year aswell, with similar payroll.
So 7 out of the top 10 teams in payroll have made it to the playoffs in the past 2 seasons, and those teams were contending even the year(s) they didn't make it.
I'm not saying that you need to spend 100m in payroll, but you cant just sit back like the MN Twins and Oakland A's and do nothing either.
The Twins and A's were in the playoffs or at least the playoff hunt every year for quite some time until last year "sitting back and doing nothing"

And how many WS did they win? Both of those teams are just about to be rock bottom next year, had they signed there young guys and stayed competive who knows what they could have done. I can say that about the A's right now, Twins are about to go take that route by not signing Hunter and probably trading away Santana.
The same number of WS that the Yankees have won from 2001 on.
That's not the point, though.
You're the one that tried to negate FmrFresnan's list of 7 out of the top 10 not making the playoffs by arguing that they still made it last year, and those that didn't were in contention.
You can't just change the standards to fit your argument. If making the playoffs as early as last year is all that matters then the A's and Twins fit the bill just as much.
Everyone knows winning the WS is up for grabs to anyone who makes the playoffs, just ask the 2003 Florida Marlins or last year's St Louis Cardinals.
