    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

General manager Kevin Towers said Thursday that Scott Hairston could be the Padres' center fielder in 2008 if they can't swing a trade this offseason.

Hairston has made some spot appearances in center field, including five innings there in 2007, but would be stretched defensively. "Because of the demand at that position, I think clubs may be asking for too much right now."
If this is what Towers is thinking, Crisp might just be the best the Pads can do

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

KT has his poker face on at this point. He won't put Hairston in CF, if he can't swing a trade, he may still be able to re-sign Mike Cameron since a lot of teams have backed off since he tested positive.

You can put Kouz in left, he has played there before coming over and from what I hear Headley is the better thord baseman. Regardless, it saves money to get guys like Rowand and Peavy.
Projections mean squat Reefer. There were some projections that had the Dodgers winning the World Series last season, but we know how that ended up don't we?

As far as Rowand making what Cameron did, you're a little off. Cameron only made $7M in 2007, Rowand is looking at $12M-$14M a year for probably 3-5 years. That's A LITTLE more than Cameron.

Finally, I said Kevin Kouzmanoff does not have MAJOR LEAGUE TIME in the outfield. I know he has a few innings in the minor leagues, but has zero time in the outfield since he's been in the bigs.....as you say, learn to read.

What the **** does someone picking the Dodgers have to do with anything? That is one lame argument. Some people are projecting him to start despite what you think so there is a reason to talk about him. Get over it!! The Padres can afford a Rowand and it would upgrade your defense and more importantly your offense. Towers is going to have to do something to get some offense in this lineup. I can read what you wrote but still think Kouz is the better option in the OF since Headley is better at third. It only makes sense. Kouz has no MLB OF experience and Headley does??? What a joke! What do you want? A better third baseman or left fielder? I read just fine, just don't agree.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

My point with your "projections" was they don't mean anything right now. Yes, I see ESPN has Stansberry "projected" to the be the 2nd baseman next season, but that means zero right now, just like the Dodgers being "projected" to win the World Series at the beginning of the 2007 season.

As far as the whole Kouzmanoff/Headley thing. Yes, I know Headley is said to be the better 3rd baseman, but the Front Office thinks Headley would be a better outfielder than Kouzmanoff. Kevin doesn't have the speed to play left field, Headley does.

We've talked about Rowand for months, thats nothing new to any of us......in fact its old news as we've moved on to realistic options.........If Rowand were realistic, we'd still be talking about him..........and yes he would upgrade this offense we all know that, about time you caught up.......but he's not going to be gettable by this team since he's asking for 14m, and even if he doesn't get what he's asking for, it will likely be close and that's too much for this team to spend on one player unfortunately .......and now that Bourn has been delt, it's unlikely he'll leave Philly

Look Reefer, the bottom line of this whole argument is, there isn't one person in this forum that wouldn't love to see Rowand in a Padre uniform for a long time to come. But that's just not possible for the kind of money he's looking for. That's money the Padres can spend elsewhere, there's still talk that they want to sign Andruw Jones to a big 1-year deal so that's still a possibility.

That's ****ing laughable since I am the first one to suggest Rowand.....last year!! But nooooooooo people (PAds) thought Sledge and Cruz would do better and Linebrink wasn't worth giving up Rowand is realistic and not one report I have seen has him looking at $14 mil. Plus I was also the one that said Rowand wasn't likely to leave after his All Star year but since he is a FA, everyone has a shot. Padres included.

Jones is asking for more than Rowand's $11-12 mil but is a better option? According to your logic, the Padres won't be able to afford Fukudome since so many teams are looking at him.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Jones has made Petco look tiny. Have you looked at his numbers when he plays at Petco? They are INSANE!! Do I think Jones is a better option than Rowand, defensively, maybe, offensively, not from what Jones showed last season. Boras' clients have signed 1 year deals before, just to get a higher, multi year deal the following offseason.

Look Reefer, like I've already said, this entire argument hasn't been that we don't want Rowand, you just don't get that he's priced himself out of the Padres range. That's my point. Andruw Jones would be a 1 year deal, which means, the contract gets dumped at the end of the 2008 season. If you sign Rowand to a 5 year $14M/year deal, that's a lot of money to be on the hook for for the next 5 years.

No one has suggested you don't want Rowand so stop saying it. You'd rather have a declining Jones on a one year deal worth more than what Rowand would make annually than have a better offensive and defensive OFer who is a long term solution? Like I said, thank god you guys aren't GMs. You simply don't make sense.

Again. I hope you guys do get Crisp and all the other mediocre players that you want. Just don't expect to do any better and the rest of the West thanks you.

Reefer, you always get all over me for "not reading" when you do the same thing wrong. I answered the question why the Padres would rather have Jones for 1 instead of Rowand for 5...

Did you read that part of my last post? The Padres don't want to be on the hook for that kind of money for 5 years.

    Petco Park

    Andruw Jones

    15 games .393 BA 9 HR's 21 RBI's .477 OBP 1.441 OPS

    Aaron Rowand

    10 games .128 BA 2 HR's 7 RBI's .190 OBP .498 OPS

See my point on Jones tearing Petco apart. He may do this offense a world of good Reefer.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Yes I ****ing read it but that doesn't mean I agree with it. Sorry if I see getting a long term solution better than a one year rental for a lot of money, more money than Rownad will make annually. Filling a hole for years to come> than one year rental with declining star. Plus you will have Giles' money off the books to go get Peavy which is most important. Stop trying to come at me with my "learn to read" comment because you take it out of context badly. Not agreeing with you is lot different than you being too lazy to read throughout the forum what I have written. The Padres will have to do something to improve this offense, their weakness and that involves spending money. If you're tired of hearing about Rowand because he's out of range then stop writing about Fuku too. Be consistent.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Regardless of how many games both of them have played here, the numbers back up what I said. Jones makes Petco Park look like a playground. He's torched the Padres every time he comes to town.

I never brought up Fukudome by the way, I was never sold on the idea of him being here.

I've never disagreed with you that the Padres need to upgrade their offense, there's no question about that. But look at Arizona, for example. Their offense was one of the worst in the NL, but they made it to the NLCS on their pitching and defense. That's how KT is building the Padres now. He'll make the moves necessary to make this team better, this team has increased it's win total over the past 3 seasons, so this team is getting better.
