Re: Peavy: not a big game pitcher?

Of course, Reefer has a point if you only focus on this year

Jake against Colorado this year before the Oct 1 game had an ERA of 1.26

Of course, up until the Oct 1 game, Jake had yet to pitch in Coors Field this year.

Don't read none of the above as any sort of excuse, just throwing the facts out there that are being questioned.

I have a question, how is it that Todd Helton hasn't won an MVP award and everyone says he's ballpark created, yet Ryan Howard wins an MVP?

Some pretty sick pitching by Brandon Webb tonight - his breaking ball was filthy. Why couldn't Jake Peavy pitch like that on Monday? damnit.

    1. Ryan Howard is not ballpark created, his homeruns go out in any park.

    2. Ryan Howard's home/road splits last year are virtually identical.

    3. When Helton was raking, Barry Bonds* was raking even more (even though Jeff Kent stole one of his MVPs).

    4. The Colorado Rockies have always sucked. Thus Helton can't legitimately make a case for MVP, playing on a shitty team.

The Phillies didn't make the playoffs when Howard won the MVP. ARod has won it with a bad team, so how does that argument work against Helton and not against ARod or Howard?

Re: Peavy: not a big game pitcher?

IMO, A-Rod shouldn't have won it, nor should have Andre Dawson.

The award is "Most Valuable Player" not "Best Player in the League"

It's kinda hard to be the most valuable player to your team when your team doesn't accomplish much.

I think it's ok to give it to a player on a non-playoff team as long as they were in contention through, at least, mid September, but the guy better have been very crucial to his team's success up till that point.

I believe Ryan Howard deserves his award due to that very reason.

Re: Peavy: not a big game pitcher?

Come on Hollywood, how much can 1 guy do for an entire team? The MVP is The Most Valuable Player to HIS TEAM. ARod put up HUGE numbers in Texas, it's not his fault that the rest of his teammates couldn't get it done. If ARod homered every at bat, but his pitchers gave up 7-8 runs per game, how is that his fault?

there were players on winning teams with better MVP cases than Helton who was on a crappy team and had worse numbers

A-Rod was on a bad team, but put up significantly better numbers than any other player on a winning team, so I guess the writers had a choice to make and they did - case in point, some writers voted for Shannon Stewart

Re: Peavy: not a big game pitcher?

I think we're going to disagree on this topic, but in Helton's 10 years, he's never once deserved an MVP? The reason I started this argument is because people say Matt Holliday shouldn't get the MVP award because he plays at Coors Field, but Rollins deserves it? Yeah, Rollins doesn't play in bandbox now does he?

Typical east coast bias if Holliday doesn't win it. The Rockies aren't even playing that game Monday night if it wasn't for him.

Not his fault at all....but there's still not that much value there when his team's never winning.

One guy can only do so much for his team, but the purpose of the award is to find who's doing the most.
