if a team that currently holds 1st place starts thinking wildcard they don't deserve to be in 1st place.

I don't think they'll be keeping this up. Maddux will be the old Maddux again and its only a matter of time before another swarm of injuries occur.

I'd rather Maddux not be the old Maddux, but rather the aged Maddux that started to appear after his fast start.

    (I know what you meant.)

    you mean win?

And please don't insinuate to me that Towers doesn't want to win, i'm already in this debate elsewhere.

You may not agree with the reasoning...I don't agree with the reasoning....but Towers didn't make the Betimit deal because he feels we can't win without Linebrink.

    He wants to win...

Winning is great......and the bottomline...... I haven't checked, but whats our record since the deadline or the break ? What's the Dodgers ?

I've never insinutated that Towers doesn't want to win, please don't suggest I have.....however we've needed a 3bag for years, who has the job of filling that spot? Oh yah....KT

We've also needed frontline arm....forget the Betemit fiasco for a minute, had KT gone and gotten when we needed for our rotation and said Walker was the best we could get to fill 3rd right now, nobody would be saying squat.... but he's failing to address the things we've needed for years.....either of them

Young is nice.....and has been a surprise to EVERYONE..... and should be considered our #2 for sure......that doesn't mean that we should be standing pat with our rotation especially when CHP damn near bled out & Estes is gone for good, all happening before the deadline. We lost guys, that weren't replaced by seasoned veterans, and we're in a frigg'n pennant race..... I like our farm kids, but if you think they are ready to go in the playoffs.....we'll have to disagree there also....

It's a good thing the season starts in April and not in mid July.

It's also KT's job to fill in 1st base, the starting rotation, catcher, centerfield, right field, left field, short stop, and 2nd base.

He has failed at 3rd base thus far, but he's doing an overall fine job if you ask me.

I agree, KT needs to learn to keep his mouth shut a bit more.

Mike Thompson has done a mighty fine job everytime he's been asked to fill in, and CHP should be back in a week.

The Padres starting rotation has been one of the best in the NL...the majors all season.

I'm starting to be convinced you won't be happy with the Padres starting rotation until we have 5 Jake Peavys starting for us.

not 5.... but a young good 1 2 3 ........ we don't have that yet....and it's what we need....Chris Young has been a boon, I gave him props....but our rotation isn't good enough for post season play IMHO....

KT overall has done a great job.........we're not talking about overall.......we're talking about two specific needs...... 3rd and pitching

I said I liked our farm kids ( Thompson ) but he's not ready for post season play.....no way no how.....not IMO

You're not going to find a Chris Young or a Jake Peavy at the trade deadline, at least not for more than I'd be willing to give up.

With the way Woody Williams has been pitching this year I feel perfectly comfortable with Peavy-Young-Woody in the playoffs.

    I'm glad you do.......I don't.......I haven't.......I wont.......

Woody has been solid, but he's injury prone now, aging, and we're only going to face quality lineups in the post season.....again I'll eat my crow here but they aren't scaring anyone

he's had one injury this year, and it's not quite the type you think of when you think of guys getting old and breaking down. (ankle injury)

And he's been "aging" all season long, that hasn't stopped him from being, arguably, our best pitcher all year when healthy. (I said arguably....)

I know...it just confuses me how you would suddenly not trust him to continue to be solid, is all.

I'd be happy with a better pitcher, but i'm not going to be worried going into the postseason with the rotation we got now...at least not more worried than the normal concern that accompanies big playoff games by default.

Because we're going to play teams like the Mets or Cards or god forbid the Dodgers, and I fear he'll get lit up......if we manage to get buy them teams like the Tigers, ChiSox, BoSox, Yanks etc would eat him alive
