Movie Pick 'Ums: Being John Malkovich's Butler

Four movies, with stars everywhere and once again no clear cut favorite. It's entirely possible that we could have another terribly weak weekend. But, pick the winner, pick it now.

Burn After Reading's done the most advertising, I really think it will take the crown.

That, and the other three look crappy, while BaR looks awesome. No question I'll be seeing that this weekend.

I think Burn After Reading will smash the other 3 with the backing of Pitt, Clooney, Malkovich, and the Coen Brothers.

I'm not sure BaR will win but it should because nothing else looks any good. Burn was totally random and bizarre but entertaining.

I think it's going to be close between Burn After Reading and the Tyler Perry movie. Very close. I got Righteous Kill finishing 3rd.

Re: Movie Pick 'Ums: Being John Malkovich's Butler

The numbers for Friday's opening day:

    1. Burn After Reading $6.5M
    2. Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys $6.4M
    3. Righteous Kill $5.9M
    4. The Women $3.7M

So Burn After Reading is headed towards approximately $15M-16M for the weekend at this pace.

Wow, all four with 10 plus million. Still sad.

Did not expect that high an opening for BaR...but good for the Coens. That's higher than any projection I saw for the movie.

Re: Movie Pick 'Ums: Being John Malkovich's Butler

The Coen brothers' dark comedy "Burn After Reading" from Focus Features and Working Title lit up the domestic boxoffice during the weekend, as its estimated $19.4 million debut showed pre-release expectations to be seriously undercooked.

"Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys" from Lionsgate bowed with $18 million in second place in a competitive weekend that seemed to rouse the previously somnolent fall marketplace. Overture's cop thriller "Righteous Kill," featuring the rare pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, had been a favorite to top the frame but still opened righteously enough with $16.5 million.

Even Picturehouse's "The Women" -- a critically dismissed remake of the 1939 ensemble comedy and the specialty distributor's final film before shutting down -- bowed with a better-than-expected $10.1 million in fourth place.

Less positively, a second weekend for last weekend's No. 1 film, "Bangkok Dangerous" from Lionsgate, saw the Nicolas Cage starrer drop a big 69% to $2.4 million in eighth place and a 10-day cume of $12.5 million.
