LOOKING TO NOMO FOR RELIEF
By GEORGE KING
July 27, 2005 -- Hideo Nomo may not have much left, but the Yankees think he might be better than what they have.
That's why the veteran right-hander will be signed to a minor league contract and assigned to Columbus (Triple-A) after he clears waivers today and becomes a free agent. Nomo was designated for assignment by the Devil Rays on July 16 and released Monday.
"I wouldn't comment on that," GM Brian Cashman said when asked about Nomo going to Columbus.
However, that's what will happen. So can Nomo, who was 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA for the Devil Rays, help the Yankees?
Considering Aaron Small starts tomorrow and nobody knows who gets the ball Saturday, anybody could help. Because Nomo hasn't pitched since July 15, it's not likely he would be able to pitch Saturday. More likely is Nomo pitching at least one game for the Clippers before being considered for a promotion.
Nomo, 36, has resurrected his career once and could do it again, although he didn't show much this year for the Devil Rays. One of his five wins was against the Yankees.
After going 8-12 for the Tigers in 2000, many believed Nomo was finished. However, he won 45 games in the next three seasons pitching for the Red Sox and Dodgers. Last year he was 4-11 for the Dodgers and signed an $800,000 contract with the Devil Rays.
He has a 123-109 record in 320 games.
