Yankees Could The Yankees Be Interested?

So it is with the Rockies' roster, particularly with catcher Yorvit Torrealba and utilityman Jeff Baker. Rockies scouts have asked other teams if they need a catcher, acknowledging that Torrealba remains available in light of Sal Fasano's encouraging spring. The Rockies shopped Torrealba hard this winter, but found no one interested in absorbing the remaining $4 million on his contract. Colorado wanted a catcher in return so it would have a backup for Chris Iannetta. That's less of an issue now given Fasano's presence -- he's a classic reserve, bringing power and pitching coach instincts. The reality is that Torrealba would be gone already, if not for the money he's owed. He would like an opportunity to compete for a starting job again, though he has been a good soldier this spring. Baker is the kind of player who gets executives fired, constantly dragging the potential tag behind his cleats. If not for injuries, he would likely to be the Rockies' second baseman. However, when that opportunity arose last season, Baker was hurt, then virtually disappeared on the bench. He has never found his niche with the Rockies, or frankly, with manager Clint Hurdle. There were two Pirates scouts at Tuesday's game in Mesa, though Baker didn't make the trip. Pittsburgh and Houston have interest, while the Yankees, Braves and Phillies have a need, but lack urgency to make a move. If not traded, Baker will make the Rockies as an utilityman
The Yankees could use both players. With Arod out, Baker could play third. When Arod comes back, Baker could be a useful utility man. Torrealba could also be of use if and when Posada goes down. Molina is good defensively but Torrealba is the better all around player. If anything, I feel the Yankees should take a look. Could be a good way of getting rid of Igawa.

Why would the Yankees want to get rid of their hurler, Kei Igawa? I think Baker could be a good addition for the Yanks.

Baker would be nice. The Yankees don't need a 3rd catcher though

Lets be honest, Posada's days as a good catcher are over. The Yankees are delaying the obvious which is their need for another permanent catcher. But there is no way they can get Baker for Igawa...they would have to give up a prospect or 2 as well.

Because he is rotting in AAA and wasting roster space.

cj, of course it will take more than just Igawa. I was just pointing out a chance for the Yankees to move some salary.

They wanted Jason Marquis, why not Igawa? Torrealba could help offset Igawa's salary is the only reason I brought him up.
