Rumor According to my inside sources...

A friend of mine knows a member of the Red Sox staff. This individual told me, and I honestly don't know how much truth there is to this, that if Manny Ramirez had gone to the Marlins, they would have turned him around to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera and 2 other specs.

Honestly, I don't know how much I would have liked this deal, because Melky is homegrown and is a young, impact player who will be a part of this team for a long time. I have always been against trading him.

Anyone hear anything about this? I really don't know how much truth there is to this, but the person who told me is pretty trustworthy, so it may just be true.

An article on sportsline.com mentioned something about that while discussing Manny's first game as a Dodger.

I wouldn't put anything past that scumbag Yankee fan Loria. I still don't believe he wanted to pay for a rent-a-vet on his team.

I had a feeling when they kept saying the Marlins would trade him to another team that it was the Yankees. Why else wouldn't they mention it?

I never heard any of that. Very interesting. I mean, that would have upset me if I was the redsox too.

They'd really have no control over the matter had they not caught wind of it before shipping Manny off to Florida.

I doubt that kind of scenario is even possible. Ramirez has 10-5 rights, and the union likely would file grievance if a team tried to subvert those rights intentionally.

Also, the Yankees don't need a left fielder/DH.

Teams usually have stipulations on trades like this.

Wouldn't Manny still be able to refuse to go to NY in the subsequent trade?

That's an honest question, I'm not sure how it works.

I'm 99.9% sure he could. His no-trade clause follows his contract, so it would make sense that he could

I don't think he would turn down the Yankees though.

Agreed. He'd get to shove it to the Red Sox in multiple ways that a guy like Manny couldn't possibly resist.

That being said, again, I wouldn't want to give up Melky for him

Re: According to my inside sources...

If I'm not mistaken, you're both wrong. He doesn't have a no trade clause in his contract. None whatsoever. He had to approve the deal because he is a 5/10 player....10 years in the league, 5 with his current team. Had he been dealt to the Marlins, he would not have had 5 years with them. So, as far as I understand the rule, he would not have had any say in the trade whatsoever.
