How about Jason Kendall ... no homeruns in his last (close to) 800 at-bats. And counting. Stop choking up on the bat!

Ensberg hit 26 HR's in 385 AB in 2003(Batting .291). It's not surprising that when he stayed healthy again, he hit like that again.

Howard had more power potential than Gomes though. The only reason his season is surprising is because Thome got hurt and he got to play.

For an Division winning team, I think that statistic is amazing and impressive.

How about Derrick Turnbow with 37 saves?

Most casual fans didn't know who he was, and I didn't know that he could pitch well after fizzling out in Anaheim/LA/California.

Or Rick Helling (4, 5 or 6 ERA every year in MLB) has a 2.39 ERA.

My pick: The Chicago White Sox are in first place and it's the last week of the regular season.

Between May 12-Sept 8th, Chirs Carpenter never gave up more than 3 runs a game with a 17-2 record. Can you say Cy Young?

Jake Peavy did that for a long stretch last season. But the Padres offense, or lack thereof, didn't allow him the same win-loss record to accompany it.

not overly impressive, but much better than I ever expected.

If you take out his one bad start, his numbers look like this
    3-1, 2.75 ERA, 28 Ks, 19 walks. 49 IP

he's had 9 starts and 2 relief appearances as a Padre, btw. (1 IP in relief, 2 games)
    updated after today's gem.

    59.2 IP, 3.17 ERA, 33 Ks, 26 walks, 4-2.

minus the one bad game. (the only one in which he's given up more than 3 ERs)

    4-1, 2.62 ERA, 31 Ks, 20 walks, 55 IP

Right about now I'd take Astacio in our playoff rotation over Woody Williams and Brian Lawrence.
