    Now You Tell Us

ESPN - Bud Selig: Major League Baseball to ban shortened postseason games

There has never been a rain-shortened game in the postseason, and now there never will be.

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced the sport will enact a rules change stating that postseason games cannot be shortened because of bad weather.

"All postseason games, All-Star games and that, will be full-length affairs, and the rule will be so written," Selig said Thursday following an owners' meeting.

Selig said the change also will apply to tiebreaker games that decide division titles and wild-card berths.
Its amazing after more than a 100 years that this is juts now becoming a rule. I like the idea and glad it is now going to be an actual rule. Good job Bud! Now all you have to do is find better umpires for these playoff games.

    I'm a slight bit confused.

Is this just a clarification that the 6 inning rule doesn't apply in playoff games? Or is this saying playoff games will be played through rain and other bad weather?

Obviously the game will not be played through bad weather. It will be exactly like Game 5 of '08 WS. Its just an official rule now.

Well, here's my beef with this rule, if your going to change for the playoffs, then you have to do it for regular season games aswell that matter playoff implications.

Lets suppose a team X missed the WC/Division title by 2 of games, and there were 2 games in the regular season that ended after 6 innings, are you going to finish those games aswell?

Even games where the score is 17-2 after 8½ innings!??!? UGH!!! You have failed once again, Selig.

Why not? Selig has failed no one.

Really? You have no problems with postponing a game that is that much of a blowout? Say it rains for 3-4 days non-stop, and you need to complete that game in order to play the following game in the other city. It's ludicrous to wait around. If this happens, the media will collectively make a big deal out of it and Bud Selig is once again going to change his stance.

So, you think NFL regular season games shouldn't be able to end in ties?

Conversely, would you want a playoff game to end 1-0 after only 5 innings?

No. I'm just saying that the rule should not be automatic for every game. It needs to be on a case by case basis.

How many times has this happened?? ONCE!! I am sure they can find the time to finish an inning or inning and a half depending on the situation in 3-4 days. And just how many 17-2 games are there in the playoffs? Not many. So hardly any blowouts in the playoffs and only once has a World Series been postponed due to weather during the game. Plus you're not looking at the alternative. Look at Game 5 for this past WS. Should the game have ended after six innings if the Rays didn't score? Is that how you want championships won?

How many times had it happened before this year?

You can't ignore a plausible scenario just because it hasn't happened yet.

I see what DK is saying.

I'm not sure if I agree with it, but I understand his argument.

You're right. I can't ignore the nearly improbable scenario put forth but I can say its better than the alternative. Finish the damn game!! Since we are talking highly unlikely scenarios, how come a team could come back down 17-2 in an inning or inning and a half?

Which is why I don't really agree with what he's arguing.
