MLB Should Gene Orza Be Fired?

Gene Orza, the COO of thr Player's Union has been accused of tipping off Arod that he was due for a urine test in 2004. In the Mitchell Report, in September 2004, Orza violated an agreement with MLB by tipping off a player (not named in the report) about an upcoming, supposedly unannounced drug test. Some also say that Orza was responsible for the list's existence. MLB sources say it was him that kept the lists instead of destroying them. Orza was said to be trying to find as many false positives as possible on the 2003 lists so he could get the number from 7% of players using down to 5%. That way there would be no reason for testing in 2004 and no penalties. Heads should roll for this and the entire era but yet guys like Orza and Donald Fehr have jobs. So the question arises, should Orza be fired for his actions as chief operating officer of the Player's Union?

Absolutely. This is ultimately the government's fault because they dragged court cases out long enough for this information to leak, but he handled it all wrong by keeping the evidence too long, and he attempted to do something he shouldn't have by proving the testing wrong. He blew this.

if any of those actions are proven to at least a a reasonable degree of belief, then hell yeah he should be shitcanned.

Yes, it's his fault the paperwork was not done for the results and samples from the 2003 tests to be destroyed.

He was trying to find false positives, leaving the proof out there of positive tests long enough for the government to come rolling in and sieze the results and samples.

He also tipped off at least one player when he knew he wasn't supposed to.

He needs to be shitcanned if the Union wants to get any type of decent image back and regain the trust of the players that no longer trust them, and I would bet A-Rod is one of those players.

Re: Should Gene Orza Be Fired?

Orza leads the strongest Union in the country that does the most for its players than any of the other sports unions. Its unclear as to whose fault it is for the list being out, probably the governments. If he got it below 5% there would have no more testing for players ever which would eliminated a lot of the headaches we are now going through.

Mistakes happen, the MLB Players still have it much better than NBA, NFL, or NHL players so don't get trigger happy, let the man give you the most possible cause he's good at his job

Exactly! So why would the players fire the guy responsible for that?

I'd fire him. He notified players of steroid tests, didn't get the samples destroyed, and isn't man enough to admit it. Fire him now.

If he's tipping players off can't somebody else fire him? Say, Bud Selig?

    Honest question.

Obviously the players aren't going to fire him. That'd be like a drug user turning his dealer into the cops.

Re: Should Gene Orza Be Fired?

Donald Fehr would have to do the firing as Selig has no firing power over the Union. Selig can definitely push the issue though. Donald Fehr and Gene Orza are just as responsible for the Steroid Era as anyone else and heads do need to roll. Fehr is not going to fire himself so why not Orza? Its clear Orza is not good at his job or else we wouldn;t be in this mess. Orza was trying to fix the '03 results so there would be no further testing. Not exactly looking out for the best interest of the players and the sport now is it?
