Nationals offense was shut down again, this time by Sean Marshall.
Ugly game. One hitter pitched by Marshall, a single from Alfonso Soriano, who then stole a base. Ryan Zimmerman also drew a walk and stole another base, and there were two more walks beyond that.
Just a really ugly game. Showed some decent patience, drawing four walks from the young guy, but Marshall K'd 6 in 6, and then Eyre struck out the side to end it.
Zach Day looked ugly, only lasted 4 and allowed 11 baserunners but only 3 scored.
and Robert Fick got ejected for arguing balls and strikes, after his FIRST AT BAT since coming off the DL.
Lots of ugly today.
Just read that Jim Bowden is eyeing Indians reliever Danny Graves, who was DFAed the other day. All I can say is... HA HA!

Ramon Ortiz recorded his first win of the season after yielding three runs in 5 1/3 innings versus the Cubs today.
Ortiz didn't walk a batter and struck out three while giving up eight hits. Reliever Jon Rauch allowed one of two inherited runners to score, but Mike Stanton followed by inducing a double play ball from Juan Pierre to end the rally and keep the Nationals ahead 5-3. A decent outing against a weak Cubs' lineup shouldn't change your opinion of Ortiz much. He's not worth using against the Astros next star

Ramon Ortiz sucks.
It's a shame Drese is out for another month because I hate Ramon bad.
Ramon could probably close better than Reitsma.
The Nationals will purchase the contact of outfielder Alex Escobar from Double-A Harrisburg prior to Saturday's game.
The 27-year-old Escobar was hitting .300/.447/.522 in 90 at-bats for Harrisburg. That the Nationals didn't even bother testing him with Triple-A was folly. It's pitchers capable of commanding breaking pitches that give Escobar a heap of trouble, and there are a lot more of them in the PCL than in the Eastern League. Escobar will probably get several starts right off the bat to see if he can give the Nationals' offense some sort of lift. NL-only leaguers may want to pick him up, but we're not optimistic at all.

Ortiz could no doubt succeed in limited work getting one inning every week or two.
He just sucks when he goes 3+.
Tony Armas Jr. took a no-decision versus the Orioles after yielding three runs -- two earned -- in five innings of work tonight.
Armas walked five and struck out one tonight, so that he was able to minimize the damage while not being at his best is a good sign. We'd bet against Armas remaining both healthy and effective for a full season, but he's a good option in NL-only leagues against the Astros next week.

The Nationals expect to have Jose Guillen (hamstring) back in right field for Tuesday's game against the Astros.
With Guillen back, manager Frank Robinson will be able to choose between Marlon Byrd and Damian Jackson in center field. Or, if he'd like, he could play both and sit Royce Clayton.

Greg Thissen was suspended Wednesday for 50 games for testing positive for drugs.
Thissen, who turns 25 next week, was hitting .224/.240/.265 in 49 at-bats for Triple-A New Orleans. He's not someone with much chance of ever making it to the majors.

Jose Vidro went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a sac fly Thursday in the Nationals' 8-5 win over the Astros.
Vidro had three homers after nine games, but he had gone 36 games without one before taking Andy Pettitte deep today. Also, the four RBI equaled his total from his previous 31 games combined. Vidro is batting .347, so it hasn't been all bad over the last month. Still, he needs to keep showing some power in order to be a top fantasy second baseman.

BTW, the Astros just stole another base off of Matt LeCroy!

Some good news on the horizon.
Ryan Church hit two homers and drew two walks in a game yesterday, and will pretty much be called back up immediately when eligible (on Tuesday).
Brian Schneider is off the DL, meaning no more Matt LeCroy embarassments. Though it probably means Wiki Gonzalez is going down, leaving Robert Fick and LeCroy as the poor-throwing catcher backups
In his return to the majors, Shawn Hill limited the Dodgers to one run and five hits over seven innings on Saturday.
Hill didn't factor into the decision, but he earned himself at least one more start. It remains doubtful that Hill will be worth using in NL-only leagues

Matthew LeCroy received a cortisone shot for his sore right elbow and is day-to-day.
LeCroy isn't going to do much catching in the near future, so he'll have plenty of time to rest his elbow. He should be available as a pinch-hitter this week
