Blue Jays Was Keeping Halladay the right move?

This has be bantered about now for a couple of days since the deadline, a deadline that saw "Doc" Halladay not traded, and he will continue to pitch for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Much was made of J.P's approach to this deal, the amount of what he wanted in return was huge in some people's eyes. When Cliff Lee got moved for what seemed like less than what J.P wanted in return, the writing was on the wall that "Doc" was not gonna be moved.

So with all that we know, was this the write move not to make?

I said on my show today that Halladay should have been moved, and that JP Riccardi should be fired because he was not. His value was never higher than it was here, and still nothing. Riccardi says he plans on keeping him for next year (although he still could be traded in the winter meetings), which is so stupid. why keep him when you know it hasn't gotten you past the Yankees, Rays, and Sox for the past 10 years, what makes you think he will next year? The only option for the Jays is to go into full rebuild mode right now, rather than this spiral of never ending mediocrity that JP has them in.

You would have said he should have been fired if he had traded Halladay for short of full value (which, no matter when he's dealt, if he's dealt, he's never getting full value in this day and age). Lose-lose for the GM.

That said, they should have traded him, they were never going to get the package they ideally wanted but they probably could get more than what was dealt for Cliff Lee or Jake Peavy.

They should have dealt him no question. The only way that it was the right move to NOT trade him would be if the Jays somehow re-sign him, but I see no way in hell that that happens.

J.P. Ricciardi says he was right to demand a huge amount in return for Halladay.

Full Count » J.P. Ricciardi surprised teams didn’t step up to get Roy Halladay
“I think a lot of it was that maybe we appreciated him a lot more because we saw him do this. Maybe pitching in Canada, he didn’t get as much attention. I’m really happy that people across the country are getting a chance to see what he’s all about. We kept sitting there saying, ‘This is Roy Freaking Halladay! Do people know?’ Not only will you have him for this year, but you’ll have him for next year. And whomever trades for him, he’s probably going to go to a place he’s going to want to stay. There’s no way we’re going to settle for one prospect, or 1 1/2 prospects. We’ve got to get a bunch of prospects because we’re dealing someone really, really special here.

JP built you a damn good pitching staff. Have to give him credit where its due.

So you preferred getting Brett Wallace and a box of twinkies?

Half credit. Drabek, and Morrow were brought in after JP left.

He did a good job with the pitching staff, but he built a very sh*tty offense built around no power and white scrappy players. He was just too conservative. The fans got tired of his 'poor me' act. Watching Anthopolous go after high level players is really refreshing.

Since he was picked up on a waiver claim, do the Jays not have to pay half his salary?

The White Sox picked up all of his salary. Roughly $60 million+
