Blue Jays sign catcher Rod Barajas

    TSN : MLB - Canada's Sports Leader
The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year contract with catcher Rod Barajas worth $1.2 million with an option for 2009.

Barajas, 32, spent last season with the Philadelphia Phillies.

In 48 games, he posted a .230 average with four home runs and 10 RBI.

Barajas has thrown out 33.7 percent of potential base-stealers over his career. The 6'2", 230 lb. right-handed hitter was a member of the 2001 World Champion Diamondbacks, batting .333 (3-9) with two home runs in the playoffs.

Originally signed by Arizona, the veteran of nine seasons (Arizona 1999-2003, Texas 2004-06, Philadelphia 2007) is a career .239 average with 62 home runs and 235 RBI in 584 games.

as long as he's the backup I don't mind the move but I would rather see Curtis Trigpen continue to develop in that position rather than older vet when Zaun already there.

It's also worth noting that the Jays and Barajas was close to signing a contract last year that was close to 6 million over 2 years, but Barajas backed out at the last minute because of pressure from the players' union feeling he was worth more money. Later the Jays signed Zaun for almost the same contract that was offered to Barajas and Rod signed in Philly for almost half of what was offered by the Jays.

Barajas sucks. End of story. The career .239 average says it all.
