Jays after two starters

J.P. Ricciardi is hoping to sign two starters off the free-agent market -- lefty Ted Lilly and righty Gil Meche, who was wined and dined Tuesday evening.

The commonly held belief was that the Jays were hoping to land one of the starters, not two. If the latter is the case, the Jays budget for 2007 will be approaching $100 million, a $20-million boost from the originally projected budget of $80 million.


"We're trying to get two pitchers if we can, that would be an extreme wish," Ricciardi said. "We had Gil up and had a nice meeting with him.


"I'd like to still retain Ted if we could and we'll keep our iron in the fire with that one. We'll see if we can do it (sign two pitchers)."
