    Free Agency Compensation Rules

Ok guys, here's the new comp system. It's very preliminary, and if you have any suggestions, please let me know. I'm posting it here first to see what you guys think.

Type A free agents will net a first round pick as well as a 1st round sandwich pick. The top 10 picks are protected. If a top 10 pick team signs a Type A free agent, the comp team will instead get their 2nd round pick, along with the sandwich pick still.

Type B free agents will net a second round pick. No sandwich pick will be given for Type B free agents.

Teams signing more than 1 Type A or B free agent will give away their picks depending on the following formula:

Add their actuals for the 5 major ratings categories for hitters, and the 3 for the pitchers. Whoever has the higher total, their former team will get the assigned pick, and then go down the draft order for the other players.

    To qualify for compensation:

    Hitter: 470 AB's
Pitcher: 170 IP or 17 starts or 65 appearances

    Type A must have:

Hitter: .850 OPS or .370 OBP
Pitcher (if qualified with 170 IP or 17 starts): 3.60 ERA
Pitcher (if qualified with 65 appearances): 3.30 ERA

    Type B must have:

Hitter: .775 OPS or .340 OBP
Pitcher (if qualified with 170 IP or 17 starts): 4.20 ERA
Pitcher (if qualified with 65 appearances): 3.90 ERA

    Re: Free Agency Compensation Rules

The only thing that catches my eye is if the same team signs two type A FAs. I think the team that lost the FA that signed second... and now has lost the 15th pick... should be given a compensatory pick created by the commissioner that is roughly equivalent to that 15th pick.

I don't like the HUGE drop in talent obtained for that type A free agent, just because the AI chose to sign on day 5 instead of day 8. I think this will come up also because many GMs rebuild and save money and then go on a spending spree when they feel they are ready to contend.

I see where you're coming from, but I also am trying to make this as realistic as possible, and that is the way they do it in the MLB I believe. It's up to everyone, but my original intent was to make it realistic. But if everyone or the majority of people feel the same way as OM, that's fine, I will change it

I've always disliked the order the players are signed cause you know it's most likely the crappier player inks first. Anywho, if you're just going to go by who signs first, there should probably be additional compensation for the players that sign 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.

Alright. I'll make it so that if a team signs 2 Type A players, the team the 2nd player came from will get their 2nd round pick and a computer generated player that will be of value of about 2/3 of the way through the 1st round. Is that more fair?

    Re: Free Agency Compensation Rules

Fairest way to compensate is to base it on talent. I.E. let's say BJ Upton was class A and for whatever reason Carl Pavano was class A, and Glass Carl signs on a new team first before Upton (both get signed by the white sox, let's say)... while I would enjoy the pick for Pavano, who should be getting the better compensation here?

OK. So we can do the tie breaker by ratings rather then date signed?

The second Type A player has to net a round 2 AND some kind of compensation pick

It's just so much more logical because free agents can be so weird, you know?

    Re: Free Agency Compensation Rules

When you compile the compensation list, you should able to see if your qualifications are good enough, not enough, too good, etc. It will probably look a little weird since you are going by stats and there were very good players rating wise that had miserable years.

I know, but that happens in real life too. Random players come out of nowhere to have good contract years and end up being comp guys

    Re: Free Agency Compensation Rules

The difference in OOTP and Real MLB is the ability to adjust to real life happenings on a minute by minute basis. In OOTP, X amount of days are simmed and then we get to adjust to what happened.

I think making OOTP exactly like MLB is taking it too far. A balance needs to be struck that is fair to each GM. I can agree with KoZ's suggestion to use ratings, but I think the very best way is to create a compensatory pick that is roughly equivalent to the pick that the first team got. It just seems to be the easiest way to make this INTERNET BASEBALL SIMULATION league... fun!

    Re: Free Agency Compensation Rules

I think my suggested way in regards to a team signing multiple class A and/or B can help resolve some of these fairness issues. I've told Crazy about the idea before, but I don't remember if SBSL uses it.

Really, no matter what NYGF does, it won't be perfect and there will always be mistakes or loopholes. It's like that for SBSL and TPSL. Just compile your comp lists each year and if you have to adjust your qualifications to include more or less, go for it.
