Question What's wrong with this picture?

Scenario: Dude falls down and hurts his arm, checks into the ER

    Hospital visit #1: (ER)

    - Talk to receptionist and checks in
    - talks to nurse and informs her of the issue
    - talks to doctor, doctor asks some questions and orders an x-ray
    - x-ray taken
    - after reviewing x-ray, doctor gives advise, gives dude a sling (no cast, just the sling) and tells him to be on his way, but not to use the arm until the follow up appointment he asked him to make.

Hospital visit #2: (2 weeks later)

    - Talk to receptionist and checks in
    - talks to nurse and informs her of the current status of how arm feels
    - talks to doctor, doctor asks some questions and orders an x-ray
    - x-ray taken
    - after reviewing x-ray, doctor gives advise, tells dude the sling is no longer needed but to go easy on his arm and sends him on his way.

    Bill for visit #1: $795

    Bill for visit #2: $92

I have really good insurance through my work....the problem is, I just got it a week prior to the first visit and I'm not in their system yet.

I'm getting refunded the 92 bucks once I'm in their system.

I just got the bill for the ER visit and need to work out what's going to happen with that.

I more posted it for the idiotic discrepancy, though, regardless of how much ends up actually coming out of my pocket.

You're 14 years old. It's not like you'd be the only paying the bill anyways.

    Go do your homework.

I'd rather overpay and get a better quality health care system. Not that our system is perfect, far from it, but more perfect than "free" systems have been shown to be. Of course this would not hold true for all, but for those able to get an insurance plan, it is better to pay for it than to allow the government to control the system and change expectations.

Yeah, and watch the quality of healthcare plummet.

My mom has duly informed me that if you can't pay and need care, almost EVERY hospital has a plan to care for people regardless.

If you can afford to pay, count yourself lucky. Healthcare is a privilege, not a right.

Thought the medicare system here in Canada is free, I can say for sure it is not right. Long wait times, bad service, and other problems plague the service. But the idea that health care is a right is part of the nature of Canada. When even gave the guy that had created the format of universal heath care the title of "The Greatest Canadian".

My mom works for a hospital and says the same thing. Basically, if you need care, no matter what, they can't refuse you.

And I agree on the quality issue. If the government runs our medical system, doctors would not be subjugated to legal fears (ie getting sued big time.) If the DMV was ran by an outside organization, I am willing to bet everything I have that the lines would be shorter and the service more friendly. They would have to do this as if they could not they would fear another organization would be able to and thus take their business. Competition keeps our healthcare system from going to hell completely.

It's not a fair system and healthcare providers aren't exactly the most generous group, but many people who have the means do not trust the public schools to educate their children so I don't know why they would want them in charge of the health care they would receive.

if you want to see how a government run health care system would work here in the states, look no further than the VA. Its been crap service for god knows how long (under both parties) and trying to do things on the cheap, if they do it at all.

and public schools while some can be alright, a lot are NOT alright. you're certainly right on that front. If i had kids, i know I wouldnt want them in the public schools here in chicago. Its a crazy bureaucracy nowadays.
