I don't know if I'd say this really grinds my proverbial gears but I don't really know where else to put it (and I don't want to post it on Facebook because some of my more Christian friends would probably take it out of context)

Anyway, I've never understood the expression many Christians like to use as an allusion to eternal love "...as far as the East is from the West".

I mean, if you stand facing North technically speaking the East is directly to your right and he West is directly to your left, so that really isn't very far.

But I'm not religious, but my guess is its refering to western hemispheres... north america and south america in the west, and middle east and surrounding in the east.

I'm sure that's what it refers to as the phrase was probably coined way back in the day when people on that side of the globe thought the entire world spanned from Europe to Asia and the "West" was western Europe and the "East" was eastern Asia making the phrase indicate from one end of the world to the other.

But, really, that just makes it an antiquated expression that holds the opposite of the intent with what we know of the world now. (Usnig the hemispheres just further complicates thing because it's still not that far away if you're right on the international date line or the Prime Meridian)

Since the phrase is from the book of Psalm in the Bible it more than likely refers to the distance between the two points at that time. The passage is about Jesus casting out sins, at a time with only foot or donkey/horse/camel travel everywhere probably seemed a great distance. The world seems smaller to us now with modern transportation and news traveling instantly.

When people tell me in the middle of a conversation on the internet that they're "just expressing their opinion" or that "we're all entitled to our opinions" or "Well, that's your opinion".

Well...no shit, sherlock.

When some character in a movie or television show has been victimized and the police are trying to catch the guy but, obviously that type of stuff takes time to catch the perp. So the victim or victim's friend/family member gets impatient and storms into the police station blabbering accusations about how the police aren't doing their job and obviously do not care about their plight and wouldn't even be trying to find the perp if they weren't being hounded by said character.

Inevitably there's some point of dialogue where the cop/detective says he's "trying his best" and the impatient prick says "Stop trying and catch the guy" or something to that affect.

What a dumbass thing to say. Stop trying? If I were the character I'd have to fight every urge to respond "ok, I'll stop trying. You go find him".

But of course, that's precisely what the character does anyway and this nonsense is only justified by the story writing when the impatient person takes matters into his/her own hand (usually her) and lo and behold the perp was about to get away before the police had a chance to get enough on him/her.
