    Rangers Rangers after Eaton

The club has also said it bid for right-hander A.J. Burnett, the top free agent starter on the market, unless Burnett's agent drops his demand for a five-year contract to four years. The Rangers don't envision that happening.

The next step may be to go back to the trade market. The Rangers talked with San Diego at the GM meetings about a potential deal for right-hander Adam Eaton that would send Gerald Laird and Adrian Gonzalez to the Padres. They have also had basic talks with Toronto.

In addition to Laird and Gonzalez, the Rangers have several players who could be of use in acquiring pitching. Second baseman Alfonso Soriano and outfielder Kevin Mench, both of whom are arbitration eligible this season, have been drawing significant interest.
They ended up trading for him.

Rangers and Eaton have cut off multi-year contract talks until after the season:

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Rangers have tabled discussions with Adam Eaton's agent about a possible multiyear contract extension.

Eaton, acquired from the San Diego Padres in the offseason, can be a free agent after the season. The two sides began talks earlier this spring but weren't close to an agreement and have decided to put things on hold.

"Both sides understand each other's position," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "I don't blame them and they understand where we're coming from. We're going to let Adam focus on the season and talk later."
I'm surprised that the Rangers would hold off considering they're all about giving out the 5 year deal to SPs...I think this is the right decision though. Let's see how he does and then try to sign him to an extension. It just surprises me that they would considering their history.
