He struggled and was sent back to Durham after a start on Aug. 1 in which he gave up nine hits and six earned runs in three innings vs. the Red Sox. With the Bulls he went 2-1 with a 3.30 ERA in five starts -- including a 16-strikeout effort over six innings on Aug. 22. His lasting outing in the Bronx was Sept. 24, 2013, when he earned the win after pitching five shutout innings.

Nathan Eovaldi (14-2, 4.17) is 9-0 in his last 13 starts, the longest winning streak in the majors this season. His .875 winning percentage is the best in the Majors.

Yankees Jacoby Ellsbury was taken out of yesterday's game with stomach flu, he is out of the line up today.

Luke Maille is making his first major league start at catcher for the Rays.

The Yankees are 69-0 when they have the lead after eight innings this season, the best mark in the AL and second in the Majors behind the Cardinals, who are 75-0.

With 182 losses vs. the Yankees, the Rays have dropped more games to New York than any other team in their history.

Moore went 4.2 innings giving up two runs on three hits, two walks with three Ks, Cedeno took the win.

Eovaldi went 5.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits, four walks with seven Ks for the loss. He hadn't lost since mid-June.

Evan Longoria left in the sixth still affected by a hit by a pitch. He was replaced by Richie Shaffer.

Jacoby Ellsbury didn't make the start but came in a PH in the seventh, he struck out and then flied out in the ninth to end the game.

Luke Maile made his first ML start going 0-for-3, but the idea was to match him with Moore since they were comfortable with each other in Durham.

The was reviewed but the call on the field was upheld.

Smyly went five innings giving up four runs on seven hits, one walk and struck out three. Brandon Gomes took the loss. The Tigers' two home runs off Smyly raised his season total to nine in 42 2/3 innings, but they were his first all season with runners on base. His previous 10 home runs had been solo shots dating back to Martin Prado's two-run homer off him last Aug. 16.

Wolf went 4.1 giving up four runs in 8 hits, no walks and struck out three, Alburquerque got the win.

Erasmo Ramirez (10-5, 3.84 ERA) had a rough outing his last time out giving up four runs in four innings against the Orioles. He has been bitten by the home run, he has allowed 10 over his last 12 appearances after yielding just four over his first 17 starts. He is making his first career start against the Tigers and only a hand full on the active roster have any at-bats against him. Ramirez has pitched much better at home, he is 4.97 ERA on the road compared to a 2.66 ERA at Tropicana Field.

Matt Boyd (1-5, 8.36 ERA) was part of the David Price trade with the Blue Jays, he also is coming off a rough outing when he yielded six runs and was pulled after one inning last Thursday against the Royals. This will be his first career appearance against the Rays.

Victor Martinez is out of the line-up for the second time.

Ramirez relieved Layne, Arencibia homered to left , Rays take the lead again 8-4.

Boxberger came in , allowed two runners but no score, so that's where it ended 8-4 Rays win first game of the series.

Miley went secen innings giving up three runs on seven hits, no walks while striking out five, Tazawa took the loss.

Archer went five innings giving up three runs on five hits, two walks and struck out eight, Bellatti got the win. Starting with his k of Sandoval to end the first, Archer then went on to strike out seven consecutive batter tying him with Andy Sonnanstine for the club record for consecutive strikeouts. The Rays remain five games behind Texas for the 2nd WC spot.

There were two good plays of the game, the very first play of the game, Betts hit a rocket that was snagged by Shaffer just off first, it was so quick, Archer had no chance to get off the mound to head to first, Shaffer ran and threw himself toward the bag to make the out face planting in the dirt.

The other was Kiermaier leading off the seventh with a double where he stumbled and bumbled around first but still made it ahead of the throw, Sox thought he missed touch first but on appeal he was ruled to have hit the bag. He went to third on a wild pitch and then Brandon Guyer grounded to Sandoval at third who threw a rocket to Hanigan to cut KK down at the plate to prevent the Rays from tying the game.

Brock Holt was lifted from the game in the middle of the seventh with upper-back spasms.
