And then there's this:ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the Tigers have placed Gary Sheffield on waivers.
Sheffield complained about his role in Detroit over the weekend, but it's very possible this has nothing to do with that: the team was also thought to be floating his name prior to the trade deadline. Sheffield and his $14 million contract for next season would almost certainly clear waivers.

First off, I don't think the Rays will go for the $14 million next year but can buy it for this year. Sheffield could play RF and move Baldelli to LF. Sheffield isn't hitting much in part (according to him) because he isn't playing the field everyday. With Crawford gone for the season and Longoria out 3 weeks, the Rays could look at Sheffield since he wouldn't cost that much in minor leaguers. No top prospect would have to be dealt. Maybe the Rays can get creative and make this work but like I said in the Longoria thread, BJ Upton has got to pick this team up. Upton hit 24 HRs and drove in 82 runs. He has just 7 HRs and 53 RBI this year.He lives in Tampa Bay, and wouldn't that be ideal? "The only reason I play is to win," said Sheffield. "I've won one championship, and before it's over I'd like to get another ring. I don't rule out anything.
"I can be in the outfield and play every day. I don't want to DH. I don't feel like a baseball player when I DH. I don't know how to be the leader that I am from the bench. I can't be a vocal leader. I can't talk to guys from the bench because I don't feel right about it.
