I agree with that, but the future sure is looking much better for them.

The man has been in the league for 7 seasons and is almost 30 years old. He's a veteran and knows this game. They also have Cliff Floyd and Troy Percival if you need a father figure. Point is they have veteran presence and don't need Bonds to ruin the environment they have.

    Imagine that lineup though:

    Iwamura 2B
    Upton CF
    Crawford LF
    Bonds DH
    Pena 1B
    Gomes/Baldelli RF
    Longoria 3B
    Navarro C
    Bartlett SS

First off, don't compare Cliff Floyd to a father figure reef.
Second, I hope nobody's comparing Barry Bonds to a father figure either, he's not a veteran presence but a cancer. Adding Bonds takes away at-bats from the young guys who are the future of this team. They don't need him and he doesn't need them. Why would he sign with Tampa Bay?
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

How the hell is Bonds a cancer? Based on what? The fight between him and Kent?

We were talking about veteran presence so don't overreact.

Bonds brings too much bullshit to the table. The media coverage alone is enough to rip a team apart.

I'm not sold on Pena who's had a year that could rival Adrian Beltre's in revelance. One year wonder. Difference is he doesn't have the track record Beltre had before this walk year, well not much better.

You might not be sold on Pena as a 45+ homerun guy but you have to be sold that he is a veteran and their best option at first. He's been on a lot of clubs and knows this game or at least he is getting by his '07 numbers. This wouldn't be like getting Greg Maddux past his prime. Maddux actually teaches the game, Bonds doesn't.

To be fair, Bonds wasn't exactly around a young team either. In fact, weren't the Giants the oldest team in the league last season?

If they Rays were smart, I would steer clear of Bonds as far as they possibly could. They dont need that headache or distraction.

The Yankees were older than the Giants.
