Rumor Possible Putz For Ankiel Trade?

A rival GM says the Cardinals have offered Rick Ankiel and a prospect to the Mariners for J.J. Putz, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports.
It seems like the Cards are really pushing Ankiel. They could be prepared to turn center field over to Colby Rasmus even after declining to give Rasmus a September callup. The Tigers have been the most persistent suitors for Putz, but Ankiel's power has to intrigue the Mariners. The problem there is that he's only a year away from free agency.
Ankiel would help ease the pain of losing Ibanez. Ankiel is left-handed, can smash the ball and play great defense. The Cards need Putz and this deal could work out for both teams.

I'm still not sure, who would close with Putz out of Seattle? I don't understand why the Mariners are looking to trade him

Morrow could close or they could sign Hoffman for a year.

I feel like trading Putz for 1 year of Ankiel and signing Hoffman will do nothing for them. They need to look long term after last year's debacle

We would probably sign Hoffman for one year to hold it down or have Mark Lowe close.

Morrow is going to the rotation next year so that option is out.

They would likely re-sign Ankiel. Hoffman would be a one year fix but Morrow would be long term.

The Tigers are apparently leading in the bidding for Putz. They are offering Matt Joyce and a prospect.

Here is an option for the Mariners -- why not let Ankiel close?
He could DH and come into the game in the 9th as the pitcher.
