Soriano may be Giant solution
THE FOUR-GAME series between the A's and Rangers that begins tonight in Texas is huge ... for both Bay Area teams.
The Rangers are convinced they have more than sufficient hitting to compete in the division and wild-card playoff races. It's hard to dispute.
But Buck Showalter's pitching staff is in a completely different state, and another 26-run thumping over four days from the A's just might prompt Rangers management to conclude Alfonso Soriano must be sacrificed for help.
The superstar second baseman would look great in green and gold. He'd effectively replace Miguel Tejada and assure the A's had the most potent infield in baseball for about the next 10 years.
But even if Oakland were to offer Barry Zito (it would take more than that), it's unlikely the Rangers would deal Soriano within their division. And short of shipping him north to Kansas City, they'd probably be less than anxious to keep him in the American League.
That's where the Giants enter the picture.
A 3-4-5 of Soriano, Barry Bonds and Moises Alou would make the Giants instant title contenders — certainly in 2006 presuming the Big Bopper is healthy.
But equally important, the addition of Soriano would be a big start toward a smooth transition in the post-Bonds era that probably will begin in'07.
Yes, Soriano is that good.
