Giants Talk To Wells, Look at Lawrence

St. Louis Post-Dispatch (scroll down): "Even though they signed Zito, the Giants and new manager Bruce Bochy remain interested in adding David Wells to the rotation. Also interested in signing Wells, who all but said he retired after pitching vs. the Cardinals in the NL Division Series, are San Diego, Arizona and possibly Philadelphia."

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "The Pirates are among the finalists to sign free agent Brian Lawrence, who twice was the San Diego Padres' opening-day starter but missed all of last season after having shoulder surgery... The Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants also have attended Lawrence's workouts, and Odle described the field of suitors as being greater than that."
I personally rather see Sanchez and Hennessey fight for it and maybe even a couple of others like Misch but definitely don't want Lawrence.

I say its a safe bet to say that Wells will sign with either the Padres or Giants, with the Diamondbacks being a long shot because of location from his home and the fact that it appears they are close to acquiring RJ. Wells I don't believe will sign to far away from home.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

Brian Lawrence is a Dodger killer, though.

So it wouldn't be all bad.

Giants GM Brian Sabean said he was no longer engaged in conversations with free agent David Wells.
The Giants previously indicated that the Barry Zito signing wouldn't stop them from pursuing Wells. However, it looks like they've backed off now. Assuming that Randy Johnson goes to the Diamondbacks, it seems very likely that Wells will remain with San Diego.
    No sweat off my sack.
