The Padres love the Dodgers' trashed pitchers. Valdez, Astacio, and now Quantrill.

hey now, KT only "looks stupid" come the trade deadline. Let's not discount the 1st place team he has constructed on limited budget (granted the feeble NL west helps, but that's besides the point)Just right now? He's been stupid looking for quite a spell now.......
Anyways, I don't know if we should put the full blame of these moves on KT. Who knows what he would've done if he was allowed to make moves that would raise payroll.

If Towers were allowed to raise payroll, he would have traded for bigger name ex-Dodger pitchers like Chan Ho Park, Kaz Ishii, and Nomo!Originally Posted by HollywoodLeo

Having said that, if someone had told me that we would be 5 games up at the allstar break, I'd have taken that happily, but since we all know that we should be at least 10+ games up right now....our lead is just not as glorious IMO
And I'd like to invite a regular starter to go ahead and bat above .300 please.......anyone......anyone......Bueller...... Bueller ???
You make some good points and I won't discount them, but my only real response is this.
Sure the Padres just came off a pretty lousy month, but that lousy month followed the best month in franchise history right after a slightly below average April. The point is one bad month and one really outstanding month tells me that, despite the current mood in regards to the team's results, how well this team will perform over the full season still remains to be seen. Especially when you take into consideration that half the team was sick the first part of the bad month and now half the team is on the DL or playing hurt. (but that doesn't take away from the obvious fact that they're essentially in 1st by default)
I will also say this, we would NOT be in 1st, by "default" or otherwise, if not for the outstanding bench and bullpen that everyone and their mother critisized Towers for putting together over the offseason (vice signing that "big name" and making the "big splash")
All that aside, now that we are where we are let's hope that Towers/Alderson makes the appropriate moves before the deadline to get us where we need to be going. Don't discount the possibility of that based off last year...read the thread I started.

Agreed........
A+ to the bench thus far
Now come on Towers, get it together with Alderson and get the missing pieces to this puzzle ....... that way after the Allstar break we can hit the ground running.
And......OH, how do we need to hit that ground.......hard.....no more f'ing around.....
GO PADRES AND ANGELS ALL THE WAY IN 2008

How did I get that one right?
Towers has built a great bench...........but lacks when it comes to finding everyday position players......IMO.........maybe Alderson will be the missing link
Astacio has actually been pretty good for us since his acquisition. He only gave up more than 2 ER once and lowered his ERA about a whole number.
Park is 4-1 with the Padres, although he has gotten tremendous run support and has a pretty high ERA
in fact, if it was my decision and nobody was on the DL it would be Woody Williams going to the pen (or DFA) and a rotation of Peavy, Eaton, Astacio, Park, and BLaw

Chan Ho is an enigma though.......our bullpen let him down on a few occasions by not holding runs.......... and his ERA has suffered due to that........ I think he's actually been a damn fine addition to the rotation.......far better than May or Redding........
Pedro F*%#ing Astacio has another fine outing in a Padre uniform
7 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 ER
