Meredith Traded To Orioles

Padres acquired infielder Oscar Salazar from the Orioles for RHP Cla Meredith.

Meredith's star had fallen a long way, but it's still stunning to see the rebuilding Padres part with him for a 31-year-old pinch-hitter. Maybe they think Salazar is a viable major league starter, but if he is, it's at first or third, two positions the Padres should have covered going forward. They could try living with him at second for now with David Eckstein and Edgar Gonzalez sidelined, but he doesn't have the range to turn into a fixture there.

I doubt they could have gotten much more for Cla.

He hasn't been a top level setup guy since 2007.

Still, would have been nice to get a minor leaguer who could have some amount of potential instead of a filler for the infield, though.

(Cue realmofotalk accusing me of "conveniently" changing my opinion)

Meredith sucked for us and wasn't getting any better.......he needed a change of scenery

We need hitters in the middle IF area......one thing this guy can do is hit and they are clogged there with mid IFer's......he's also a doubles hitter......there is no way this can be viewed as anything more than a good move for both teams
