ESPN - Trevor Hoffman still miffed by treatment from San Diego Padres

According to Trevor Hoffman, who went public today, told Buster Olney that after 16 years with the team, GM Kevin Towers told him they were cutting ties with him OVER THE PHONE. And he refused to meet with Trevor in person. If it's true, Towers really needs to come clean, because this is NOT the way you do business. Way to go Padres front office.

I think NYGF is more miffed at it being done over the phone.

While I don't think it's the huge ordeal he's making it out to be I do agree that it's something that should have been done in person.

Exactly Leo. I'm not upset the team is moving on. I'm upset that after a Hall of Fame career, completely with one team, that the GM doesn't have the guts to actually sit down with a face of the franchise and say look buddy, it was a great run, but this is a business and we gotta part ways. Rather than what he did, which was to not say anything until Trevor called him and KT says "we're done, peace"

It's not the worst thing to tell somebody over the phone, but maybe if you guys had actually read the article you would have realized why Hoffman was pissed.

Hoffman says that for days, there was no response to his request for a meeting that would include Padres owner John Moores -- and then last Friday, he was told by his agent, Rick Thurman, that Padres GM Kevin Towers had called and indicated that the team intended to withdraw its offer because word of the $4 million proposal had leaked out. "I didn't believe him," said Hoffman. "I told Thurman that I was seeing stuff on the internet that they still intended to negotiate."



But Towers reiterated to Thurman that there would be no offer, and when Hoffman learned this, he asked for a face-to-face meeting with Towers and Padres CEO Sandy Alderson. Fifteen minutes later, the Padres' offer was officially withdrawn, via fax. Hoffman said that when he spoke to Towers, the GM said, "No, we are no longer negotiating. We are going in another direction."
