Nobody's stealing the history
He was so integral to MLB then that 15 other teams were too ignorant to value him as a ballplayer. They had their chance to make him an integral part of their team's history, but they wanted nothing to do with him. **** each and every one of them for now wanting to mooch off the most significant event in Dodgers history. And we thought the Miami Heat retiring Michael Jordan's number was bad enough?

Of course no team wanted anything to do with jackie robinson HE WAS BLACK! That's what made him so special! If every team wanted him, there would be no huge deal made about him!

How so? Paying him $3 million to leave is better than $9 million to play?

Teams looking to shed payroll do that kind of thing all the time.

    $9 > $3

Not if you plan on trying to trade that player and get something in return, as opposed to not getting anything in return by just buying him out.

I kind of hope they do trade him.

No point in keeping a 37 year old vet around for the year if you don't plan on competing.

May as well get something for him.

But would draft compensation apply to Giles? I imagine with his good year last year he would have been class A.

Trevor might be to blame guys.......why not make your appt. to see the guys that actually work the contracts ? Why go over their heads and make an appt. with Moores, when you didn't even respond to the offer given ? Looking to pull heart strings, and make this overly personal ?

The FO offered a fair contract for a 42 year old, declining icon w/ another 4m option........that's where the negotiations should have started and centered.

I'm thinking that Hoffy's side is more to blame for this fiasco than any other right now.

Re: Hoffman's HOF Career Done In SD

I am sorry but I cannot blame Trevor Hoffman one bit. He is not the one who pulled the offer off the table. It was the front office and its all about saving money. What is wrong with Hoffman wanting to meet with ownership? He wanted to know what direction the team was going and after pulling their $4 million offer and their attempts to trade Peavy and Greene, it was apparent they are rebuilding and shedding salary. Hoffman met with the same people before his last deal and did not like the situation then either. Trying to meet with Alderson, Towers and Moores is not something wrong to do. Its understandable. They turned him down and its there fault!!

As for Giles, the Padres are better off dealing Giles now and getting developed players than waiting for two compensation picks if he signed with another team. Picking up his option was a no brainer in the first place and now with the direction of the team it makes even more sense. Padres are trying to make it worth his while if he waives his no-trade clause.

There will be no Babe Ruth rotunda, because the Yankees still compete with the Mets for both fan support and media coverage, so don't count on that one. However, if they decided to put up a statue of Mays, I'd be fine with that. I mean, what's the problem with honoring baseball's history, your city's baseball history, and your owner's childhood all in the form of a stadium?

Also true. He was mediocre by that time, but he was a Met. I wouldn't have any issue. Although, personally, I would rather see statues of Seaver, Gooden, Piazza, etc.
