Giles is pretty underrated but I don't know if I'd go as far as to call him the best RFer in the game.

    Re: 2008-2009 Offseason thread

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles turned down a proposed Khalil Greene-for-Garrett Olson trade.
The Padres are pretty serious about moving Greene if Olson is all they wanted. Maybe the Orioles were right not to jump -- Greene is under control for just one year and the team isn't going to contend next season -- but Olson has been a real disappointment and hardly seems like a high price to pay.
Padres are going to have a hard time moving Greene if the O's won't move Olson for him. Olson has had great success in the minors but it hasn't translated to the Majors.

Olson sucks. It's a bad sign that they turned it down. Greene's value is fading fast.

Orioles rather keep Olson and get a one year fix like Izturis at SS instead of losing a pitcher and picking up Greene's contract. Pretty smart on the O's part. Orioles need all the pitching they can get.

Greene's only value may be to play for us next year in the hopes that during his contract season he has that huge year and his value goes up making him tradeable mid season........

Padres GM Kevin Towers said he isn't close to any deals involving Khalil Greene.
"I don't anticipate anything happening with Khalil anytime soon," he said. The Padres have reportedly offered Greene around to the Orioles and the Cardinals.
Its going to be tough to move this guy and getting anything worth value in return, even if they hold onto him till the trade deadline next season. Towers needs to get creative to rid themselves of his salary.

Padres claimed Everth Cabrera in the rule 5 today.......SS/2b who had 73 stolen bases last year in A ball.......decent OBP guy, low power but a doubles and triples top of the order potential kind of guy......

Nice p/u.....be interesting to see how he does this year.....

The Padres are looking at David Eckstein, Mark Grudzielanek and Omar Vizquel in their hunt for middle infielders.
The team could add two veteran stopgaps with quality internal options to take over at either second or short. Matt Antonelli isn't ready, and Edgar Gonzalez is a subpar defensive second baseman. If the season started tomorriw, it'd likely be Gonzalez at second and Luis Rodriguez at short.
Grudz would be the better of all of them. He can hit .300 and still play good defense. Vizquel would help ensure 100 losses.

I'm of the opinion that any money they are willing to allocate to a mid IFer should be spent on a rotation guy.......let it ride with the IFer's we have.......they aren't going to make a playoff run next year anyway, and can use more pitching now and in the future......

LRod, EGon, ECabrera, Denker & even Hairston (why not) can man SS and 2nd next year...but we really don't have a true #3 arm......

The Padres agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Luis Rodriguez; agreed to terms on minor league contracts with pitchers Kevin Correia, Chris Britton and Oneli Perez, and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo.
Correia is a useful reliever and Alfonzo could be the answer at backup catcher. I love seeing the Padres collect the Giants trash

Correia might work out in Petco under Balsey.......and Eliezer probably wont leave Portland unless he shows he can hit w/o roids (or whatever he was on up there in SF)

Padres agreed to terms with outfielder Scott Hairston on a one-year, $1.25 million contract.
That's a rather high salary for a reserve eligible for arbitration for the first time. Hairston hit .248/.312/.479 in 326 at-bats for the Padres last season. He'll likely be the team's top backup throughout the outfield this year.
