Padres nearing $11 million, 2-year deal with Greene

Padres nearing $11 million, 2-year deal with Greene - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Khalil Greene's big 2007 season with the San Diego Padres is about to pay off with a nice contract that will allow the shortstop to avoid arbitration.

The two sides spoke Saturday and were closing in on a two-year deal worth roughly $11 million, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been finalized.

Greene reportedly was going to ask for $4.9 million in arbitration, while the club was expected to offer $4 million.

SOSD reported today that the 4 year deal offered to KG before they settled on the 2 year deal was only worth $29m......unlike the $40m reported by the local radio station 1090am.......no wonder KG and his agent said no way.......even I think it takes more than 30m on a 4 year deal to get him signed......sheesh.....

Also KG has been quoted multiple times over the last week saying that there is no place he'd rather spend the rest of his career than San Diego.......so the good thing about this is that it was just money, and not geography that was keeping a long term deal from happening.......To me this means that a multi-year deal could happen if he proves again this year that he can stay healthy, and mash.
