    Tony Clark

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres and Tony Clark are deep into negotiations.
The Padres were also talking to Mike Sweeney, but it appears he'll stay in the AL, perhaps with the A's or Rangers. Clark won't get nearly as much playing time in San Diego as he thought he would when he became a free agent, but he will have a chance to make it back to the postseason.
Good bat off the bench with some power. Great signing. Gonzo will be pleased.

I'm for this far more than Sweeney that's for sure. They worked Sweeney out yesterday in Petco, and in the OF to boot.

Yeah Clark definitely has more power than Sweeney. I wouldn't mind the Giants signing Sweeney to a one year deal since he's right handed.

Tony is one of my favorite players. I hated watching him with the D'bags. He is an SDSU grad and would love to see him come to SD.

I think I was one of the few who was happy about them possibly bringing in Mike Sweeney as a back up, but I do like Tony Clark better.

    Re: Tony Clark

The San Diego Union Tribune reports that the Padres and Tony Clark have agreed on a one-year contract worth around $900,000.
Not exactly the two-year, $3 million deal the Diamondbacks reportedly offered him. The paper reports that while the the money has been worked out, it might not be announced for a couple more days due to "details." Clark would primarily provide a power threat off the bench, but also spell Adrian Gonzalez at first from time to time. He's a switch hitter, but is really only effective against righties.
Silly that he turned down that deal from the Dbacks worth more money and more playing time.

Mike Sweeney probably would have been a better signing.

    Re: Tony Clark

Mike wouldn't have been had for 900k......and we're topping out the starting payroll as it is.......so since it wasn't likely to happen......this was a better signing, as it was realistic

Then again.....maybe it was......and we just wanted Clark more
Update: Sweeney signed a minor league deal with Oakland on Sunday, including a non-roster invitation to spring training.
edit........Then again being in the AL makes far more sense with the DH being his 1st and best option right now.........
