Look at the successful acquisitions in the past

Justin Hampson, Heath Bell, Cla Meredith, Kevin Cameron (to a degree), Rudy Seanez, Rod Beck, Justin Thatcher (to a degree)...

Hell, even Scott Linebrink was an unknown until Towers signed him.

The only two on that list that anyone might have predicted would have been Beck and Seanez (especially Rudy) but both were thought to have been washed up at the time and KT got them on the cheap.

Jered Wells might be a possibility, however, to come up and fill in ala Clay Hensley and do a beautiful job

I guess it all depends on whether or not Towers would think he'd fit.

Joe Thatcher you mean? Do you look in your minor league system before you look to free agency and/or trade?

Who'd be ready in our minors other than Jered Wells?

Will Startup? His first 8.2 IP in Portland were not great, but his last 10.2 IP were downright unhittable.

We'll see how he does during Spring Training but he's got good numbers in Portland last year.

Those guys are projected as back of the rotation starters........ and Wade LeBlanc will get a shot at the rotation this year......long shot, but he's already been talked about......and he's the closest guy that I'm aware of......

As far as who takes Brocails place.......IMO Hampson or Thatcher or a combo of the two does that job just fine........I have a gut feeling about Hampson this year........I think he has a breakout dominant season in the mid-relief role

Free agent infielder Cesar Izturis is available, but published reports indicate he is seeking a starting job. The White Sox appear to have no interest in Chris Gomez, who can play all four infield positions and is attracting interest from the Yankees, Padres, Rangers and Pirates.
Gomez would be a better defender and hitter than Blum was. Good bench guy.

I was thinking the same thing too Leo, I had to look up his picture just to make sure I was thinking of the same guy.

    Re: 2008 off season thread

I don't know if anyone saw the article on the North County Times this morning, but the last part of it confirmed that the Padres have talked to the Cardinals about Jim Edmonds.

I also got a response from Tim Sullivan on Geoff Jenkins, asking if that was just a rumor or if they have legit interest. He seems to think that's going to happen before the end of December and could be during the Winter Meetings next week.
