Cubs won't sign Prior unless he tells them that he'll pick up his player option for 2009. If he doesn't give any indication that he will, they'll probably try to trade him or non-tender him.

Possibly but it seems like the Cubs are sticking to the script that has been in place over the past three seasons. Sign Wood to a one year deal, sign Prior to a one year deal to avoid arbitration. I think the Cubs have stuck by too long for another team to get lucky with Prior.

If Prior signs it's going to be a 1+1 deal according to everything I've read. They want a guaruntee that, if they give Prior a player option, that he'll pick it up. If he's not willing to promise that, the Cubs will start talking to other teams about their interest.

I would love to see a team like the Nats or Royals sign Prior, Clement and Wolf to make the All DL Rotation. Even if they made a combined 30 starts, it would be better than what the got on the most part.

I had read that the Phillies have already made an offer to Wolf, so he could be headed back to Philadelphia. As far as Prior, I would love to see him in a Padre uniform next season, blowing everybody away and pissing off Cub fans. That's just the way things go for them isn't it?

eh, he won't be missed, even though he did pleasantly surprise us last year with his effectiveness. (for the most part)

So the question becomes, who takes his place. One name that's been brought up in another site was Jared Wells.

Probably somebody Towers signs or trades for that we never heard of, yet he winds up being one of the better middle relievers in baseball next year.

Who would that be...is there anyone in the Padres minor league system that can fill that role? I don't know what relievers are out there that the Padres would have any interest in, unless you throw Eric Gagne's name out there but I think he's going to be too expensive. Especially since he's a Boras guy.

It wouldn't be Eric Gagne, he's too high profile which goes completely against KT's M.O.

Look at the successful acquisitions in the past

Justin Hampson, Heath Bell, Cla Meredith, Kevin Cameron (to a degree), Rudy Seanez, Rod Beck, Justin Thatcher (to a degree)...

Hell, even Scott Linebrink was an unknown until Towers signed him.

The only two on that list that anyone might have predicted would have been Beck and Seanez (especially Rudy) but both were thought to have been washed up at the time and KT got them on the cheap.

Jered Wells might be a possibility, however, to come up and fill in ala Clay Hensley and do a beautiful job

I guess it all depends on whether or not Towers would think he'd fit.
