I think Antonelli is where the Padres want to go, but having someone that can challenge him, wouldn't be a bad thing.
If the Padres bring back Blum ( which I think is automatic ) there will be 4 guys out of the shoot fighting for that job with 3 having a realistic shot.

    Antonelli
    Hairston
    Blum
    Stansberry

I would think our needs lie elsewhere, and that those guys should be able to get the job done. If Ant wins the job, Hairston and Blum go to the bench and become the back ups for IF and OF with Hairston having an outiside shot to start in LF if we don't find a better option. Which I'm hopeful for.

Marcus Giles, 2B--San Diego Padres: The Padres are likely to decline the $4M option for 2008 on his contract.

Jason Jennings, RHSP--Houston Astros: He is expected to be ready for Opening Day as he continues to progress in recovery from flexor tendon surgery. However, he will have to settle for a 1-or-2-year deal, probably incentive-laden, as a result of the injury. The Padres, Dodgers, Mariners, Phillies, Pirates and D-Backs expressed interest in him at the trading deadline.
    5/50 for Rowand..........GET'R DONE KT

I've heard that Fukudome might be had for 5-6M/year also............IF thats true then sign them both *********..........

15-16M for both players would solidify our OF for the next 4-5 years and could end up a huge bargain, and the payroll is available to make that happen.

Add to this that next year we're losing Maddux, Giles and Hoffman freeing up something like $28M, which would allow for us to sign Peavy LONG term, we're in great shape financially and personnel wise.

    A potential lineup of :

    Antonelli
    Giles
    Rowand
    AGon
    Fukudome
    Kouz
    Greene
    Bard

Well it sure has a different feel doesn't it.....and many of these guys could be flipped to other spots in the lineup......potentially high OBP, good BA, good power hitting, good defensive lineup...........

probably a pipe dream, but luckily we the real fans get to have fun with things like this........

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

A guy that I might have interest in, is Geoff Jenkins. Hit .255 with 21 HR's and and 64 RBI's. The Brewers have a $9m Team Option or $500k buyout of his contract. He's not going to be nearly as expensive as Rowand, Hunter or Jones, you may be able to sign him to a 4-5 year deal in the vicinity of $20M-$25M deal.

I've also got an idea for a lefty in the rotation, if he doesn't pick up his player option for next season, Andy Pettitte. He's 35 years old, you may be able to sign him to a multi year deal plus an option year. I think, at Petco, and in the NL West, he could be a force in this rotation.

Jenkins would be the 2nd coming of Brian Giles here........we'd get him past his "prime" at 34, and you want to sign him to a multi-year deal ? No thanks........I mean hell NO thank you

I'm not saying I don't want Rowand, I just have a feeling his going to get priced out of our range, pretty quickly, the way it's sounding. Do I think Rowand should be our top priority, hell yes, especially if they're not going to re-sign Mike Cameron. I'm just afraid he's going to be priced out of the Padres' range.

If we were to sign Jenkins we'd still need a CFer, so it's not really a matter of either/or between him and Rowand.

That's a good point, and possibly a right fielder if Giles isn't going to be ready for Opening Day, but if the Padres are ready to bring up Chad Huffman, maybe give him the starts until Giles is ready to go.

The Padres claimed switch-hitting utility infielder Luis Rodriguez off waivers and released outfielder Brady Clark. Rodriguez, 27, batted .243 with 19 doubles and six home runs in 445 at-bats with the Minnesota Twins from 2005-07. "He has a very high contact rate," Towers said. "He's versatile." Clark batted .306 in 49 at-bats, but struggled defensively in Monday's season-ending loss to the Rockies

You're a little late on that Reefer. I don't know much about him, it just could be stocking up on super utility players to see how they do during ST.

Wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't make the roster out of spring. Unless they don't plan on bringing Blum or Stansberry back for some reason. I think Stansberry is still under team control.......though he may have just been signed through 2007.........not certain

Stansberry was only signed through the 2007 season, so he becomes a free agent if the Padres don't re-sign him after the World Series.

    Re: 2008 Ideas / rumors / trades

Blum was also signed through the 2007 season, so he's also a FA after the World Series. So that would take Blum and Stans off your list, PFF, unless one or both are re-signed.

Now, my thought on this is, if you're not planning on re-signing either player, than Loretta has to be on their radar. I just think they want Hairston as an outfielder instead of 2nd base.

I can't see them not bringing Blum back.........I'd pencil him in as is...........he was clutch and is versatile........he'll be back........Stansberry probably wont unless he'll sign a minor league deal, which might be possible.......not sure there is a ML contract out there for him.......but who knows
