If he's truly in it for "market value" he'd turn down 17 per in a heartbeat....and would not be being loyal.
In the meantime, the Padres wouldn't be giving him the 20-25 mil per that he'd, instead, be asking for and not fulfilling what you require of them to be "loyal" to him.

Are you forgetting the $20 million we are giving to a 43 year old slugger? Did that somehow slip your mind? No one is happy with Zito's results but he is only costing us $14 mil this year. I am going to give Zito more than one year especially coming into a new league to say whether he is worth it or not. So far, he is a bust. Next year, who knows? Like I said, if the Padres had a GM then you can make it work. Sabean has not been a good GM and has gone out and got guys like Aurilia and Roberts. Pads make similar deals and they are just stupid. Even with Zito's contract we have a good rotation so he affects nothing. And to say it's 1/3 of a team's payroll is just retarded!

If Peavy becomes average or gets hurt 3 years into a 100 mil contract,a Team like the Padres with 1/3 of "their" payroll going to that player,would be ruined for several Seasons.Padre fans screamed bloody murder about the contracts given to Klesko and Nevin(after they stopped producing that is).Now they want to do it again?
You can't have it both ways.It's real easy to look "BACK" and say why did you give this guy 5 years 16 per when it doesn't work out.Then,start screaming to pay the next guy even more when you don't have to be accountable.IF it works out....Great.....if it doesn't,then you have several Seasons down the drain.

He's won two Division titles in a row with a low payroll that is not of his choosing.If he had more money to spend everyone would think he's a genius...as it is he has other GM's afraid to even deal with him on trades.He'll look even better when the Farm system starts to produce talent for the big club.So he's basically been winning three Seasons in a row with very little money to spend and ZERO help from the Farm.

If Peavy is given a 19 mil/year contract it would be almost exactly 1/3 of this years payroll.
Nevin and Klesko were the "big bats" on the Padres when they were given their deals.....if they weren't signed fans would have accused the Team of being "cheap".
I understand it is "life" when a player gets hurt,but if its a player who is eating 1/3 of your payroll it is too much for the Team to recover from......which is why I said it probably won't happen.
The people who are trying to have it both ways are the ones who complain about huge contracts when they don't work out(ie:Nevin and Klesko),yet want the huge contracts to still be given out(ie:Peavy)

Finishing first is all that matters,the Padres can't control how bad the rest of the Division is.....getting to the playoffs gives you the chance of winning it all....just ask Cardinal fan.
