I never said they were going to sign Zito. I said what a lot of people said which was what Zito's comments were. His postgame comments after the A's faced the Padres, he said "I could be pitching here next season". I was hoping the Padres would make a run at him, but I had a feeling his price tag was going to be too much.

The conversations that I've had, it sounds like Dunn wants to be here and be here long term. He'll be a FA after the 2008 season, or if he's traded, he becomes a FA after this season. I think it's a good move for the Padres if you ask me.

Only if he signs an extension is it a good deal.......otherwise it's way too pricy for a rental......

I completely agree....you can't give up a Linebrink or Headley or whoever if you're just going to rent Dunn for 3 months.

Giants have one of the best rotations going right now so when the offense starts to click again we have more than a good shot at getting third. That's kind of like saying I'm the tallest Asian at 5'8" And we finally beat those Dbacks. Great series which shows how good the West is.

    Re: Official 2007 Trade Rumors

This from Buster Olney's chat today on ESPN.com....

Scott (San Diego): What sort of moves do you see the Padres making? They have to try to make a move for a RH power guy like Dye, don't they? Or are they content to try to win 1-0 and 2-1 games every night and get swept out of the first round of the playoffs (if they even make it)?

Buster Olney: Scott: Kevin Towers has been asking around a lot for a hitter. The problem is that either they are very expensive (Carl Crawford) or just aren't that inspiring (Brad Wilkerson).

Brad Wilkerson? I hope that's not who he's asking about. I'll take Crawford though....in a heartbeat.

    Re: Official 2007 Trade Rumors

PFF and I had this conversation earlier today, I told him that I was hearing the Padres could sign Brady Clark if the Dodgers released him after the 10 day waiting period...looks like Bill Center of the UT confirms it.

Russ(Q) To clarify, is the Brady Clark talk a Bill Center opinion or have you detected some interest from the Padre organization?

BillCenter(A) The Padres were very interested in Clark each of the past two offseasons. But not at the $3.9 million the Dodgers gave him. I am told they are very intetested if they don't have to trade for him and pick up that salary. A waiver deal would mean they'd be eligible only for the minimum

He wouldn't really be an "answer" but he'd be a better option off the bench than Blum.

The problem is, we'd still need Blum as a back up SS.

Milwaukee is paying $2.3 million of Clark's salary. But whatever, the Padres can have him. If your best trade bait is Chase Headley, you're not getting Adam Dunn or Carl Crawford.
