Padres Mike Piazza: Wants To Stay With San Diego

Update: On Friday, Piazza reiterated his desire to play for San Diego again next season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Recommendation: He has an $8 million option for 2007 with a $750,000 buyout. The Padres are unlikely to pay Piazza that much, but he could return at a lower price. Piazza is experiencing a resurgence this season. His 22 homers lead all major league catchers, and are his personal best since 2002. He is hitting .279/.335/.504 with 64 RBI in 365 at-bats. If Piazza is a Padre in 2007, he will likely start four to six games per week, just like this year.

If they could spread what he's set to make out over two years, I'd be interested in them doing that....even in '08 he'd be a great back up catcher and bench bat to have.....

So instead of paying him $8M next year, why not try to resign him for 2 years $10M further lowing payroll for next year ?

I hope you don't expect all of that to happen.

You do realize Boras is asking for 20 mil/year for 5 years for Zito's services, right?

If you can get Soriano..... then Mulder and Woody would be fine in this rotation....and Rameriz might be more willing to sign if Soriano is on this team

Piazza coming back wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen. He is a proven leader in the clubhouse and a good hitter. His defense is not as good as it once was and he has some trouble throwing out baserunners, but, overall, he is a plus-player.
I agree, the chicken should come back.

Honestly, I think Piazza should sign a 1-day contract with the Mets and retire

If he does come back though, I have no problem rooting for him again in a Padres uniform.
