I'm very happy with getting Kottaras for Wells. The Sox are out of contention and Wells was planning on retiring at seasons end anyway. So it's good we got something in return for him.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

Good move on both teams' parts.

I was skeptical at first, but after looking at Kotteras' minor league production, rather than basing my opinion soley off the fact that he was a "top 100 prospect" i'm not as sold on him as I once was.

Even so, Wells is a rent a player who may not even do well. The Pads don't exactly have loads of catching talent in their organazation either...

Wells may also do good, who knows.

And, on the contrary, catching is the one place where the Padres ARE relatively deep in the farm, except all the good prospects are in the lower end of the farm.

    Colt Morton is #1 now.

I think Wells will bring valuable experience to their club, he has pitched in so many playoff games, even if he is NOT that successful with his "talent", he can help with the mental part of the game for the other pitchers..

Yet another horrible decision by management. I'm sure Wells will do alright, but you don't just hand over prospects with as much potential as Kotteras does (at a very thin position) for 42 year old headcases. I really hope that KT announces tomarrow that Kotteras is not the player to be named later.

On a positive note, welcome back Boomer; I missed you.

This can go one of two ways, and sadly hindsight isn't available yet...

    1. Boomer give us 5 solid outtings, we make the playoffs, he pitches solid and this is a good deal

    2. We miss the playoffs for whatever reason, and this is a bad deal

To me it's as simple as that....and we wont know until it's over whether this was a good deal.......but at least they addressed the glaring need for a starter, even if you don't agree with who they plugged in....he's a lefty, has playoff experience, and right now is pitching very well....

Peavy + Young + Woody + Wells + Hensley = pretty solid rotation

I have to admit I was wrong about Piazza......and the combo of Piazza/Bard is a pretty damn solid catching duo to have......and if there is a position that I think could stand to be platooned in order to keep the guys health and fresh it's the catcher position......

If memory serves me correct, Wells had a hard time against the NL West so yay!

i think just the fact that he has so much playoff experience is what the Padres liked about the acquistion of Wells

And our fifth starter has been a bit shaky.
