If you read the article it also says the Padres had the first crack at Liriano. Both teams could be sitting mighty pretty on top of the West with his arm.

I wish that were true Reefer. Towers was given a great opportunity to acquire Wilson Betemit, but that didn't happen, so I highly doubt this "hitter" is going to be anyone that is going to help this team.

Beltre makes sense......and Seattle might deal him........but if they don't do it quickly, like today or tomorrow, it will be too late

It won't be Beltre. If Towers didn't want to bring on Betemit or Maddux because of money, I can promise you Beltre won't be a Padre. Yes, it would be an upgrade with the bat and possibly defensively, but I just don't see it.

Betemit wasn't because of money.....it was because he figured Linebrink would be more valuable.....Betemit would have cost us less than Linebrink....resigning him, if that what you're talking about is a joke...we're going to have to resign all the kids we have, that includes whatever 3bag we get

There was a shot that Walker could play 3rd too, but you still didn't like that move. Burroughs is not the answer. Do I think Leone would be, I don't know, but I would like him to get a shot at it. He showed in Spring Training that he could hit with the best of them, I think the Padres would have nothing to lose by bringing him up.

to be fair, Spring training isn't really "the best of the best"

It's either others like Leone who are unproven trying to get a roster spot, or others who already have theirs locked and aren't giving it 100 percent.

you make it sound like Towers just didn't want a third baseman or Maddux.

Neither non move was because of Money. Betimit was because he didn't want to get rid of Linebrink and Maddux was because he didn't have a gold glove SS lying around on his bench to trade.

To imply we won't get a decent bat off the basis that Towers just doesn't want one is just assinine.

I dont think its going to happen because Seattle is probably going to want San Diego to take a large portion of his contract.
