Pirates Name Hurdle Manager

The Pirates agreed to a three-year contract with Clint Hurdle to become their next manager.
He was the leading candidate all along but the Pirates had to wait for him to first finish the World Series as Texas' hitting coach and then end his flirtation with the Mets for New York's own managerial vacancy. Hurdle was the manager of the Rockies when they made the World Series in 2007. He compiled an overall 534-625 record (.461) over eight seasons as manager in Colorado. Pittsburgh hasn’t had a winning season since 1992.

I think this is a fantastic choice for the Pirates. Hurdle is good with young players as we saw with the Rockies and he can teach these younger guys how to hit. Lets just hope the Pirates give Hurdle a full three years to try and turn this franchise around and not fire him early because of having piss poor talent surrounding this club. Off to a good start so far Pittsburgh.

I know but it really shouldn't be asking a lot to let a manager live out his contract especially when its only three years.

They may have gotten the right guy for the job, but if the ownership still don't give a shit they will still be awful come the time Hurdle's contract is over.

Hurdle is another one who is now out of the Mets managerial race. I think he was a good hire, but we'll see if he can change the culture of losing in Pittsburgh.

Fantastic hire by the Pirates. Horrible choice for Clint Hurdle. This will be a large blemish on his career because of exactly what K-Zone said. They're still gonna be awful no matter who their manager is. Jesus couldn't manage that team to a winning season without new ownership.

Football is also a lot easier to turn around a losing team quicker because players drafted and signed can have a big impact right away. Baseball is MUCH tougher to turn a perennial loser around because draft picks and young players take years to develop, you have to time things right.

Plus in football, when hiring a new coach, they have mostly complete control over their team, at least WAY WAY more control over the team and personnel decisions than a baseball manager. Plus, when hiring a manager in baseball, they have less control over the minor league system, which doesn't even exist in football. And a coach has way more of a direct, in-game impact than a manager. So hiring a new coach in football has more of an impact on a team right away than hiring a manager in baseball.

Don't misread me, I'm not predicting success. I just don't buy into the notion that just because a team has been losing year in and year out that it's automatically a given that the losing will continue now and forever.

The Pirates are still an organization with 5 championships.
