    Arrrrrrrrr Mientkiewicz

Pirates signed first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Mientkiewicz seemingly has little chance of taking on a prominent role in Pittsburgh given the presence of Adam LaRoche and top prospect Steven Pearce. LaRoche's defense is solid and he's a left-handed hitter, so Mientkiewicz's skill set duplicates what the Pirates already have in a superior player. He's still a useful player to have around, but Pittsburgh is a bad fit.
I have to agree with the writer here. There is no reason for them to sign him. Marlins and even a return to the Twins maybe but not the Pirates.

He's the best defensive first baseman I've ever seen, but has no purpose here.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

JT Snow has to be the best I've ever seen. He even saved Dusty Baker's kid during the World Series!!

He should have stayed in New York. I want him back.

Haha I remember that! I was there. It was intense.
But yeah Mientiewictz is a good defensive player but the Bucs just aren't his team.

I highly doubt he'll make the team anyway, unless LaRoche gets hurt in the spring, and even then, I'm pretty sure we'd go with Pearce and first and just plug in another outfielder.

Dougy is supposed to be getting time at 3B, this spring. If he takes to the position, he may actually make the team.

I would love to have him coming off the bench. As it stands now our bench is a joke.

Well, if Julio Franco can play 8 innings at third base for the Mets last year, I think Doug "Gold Glove" Mientkiewicz can do it. and he's not as bad a hitter as people seem to think, he is pretty decent.

Doug was signed as a catcher and has played nearly every position at sometime during his career. I think he can handle a few innings a week at 3B, and maybe the outfield. He can also give LaRoche a day off at 1B.
