    A's More Surgery For Chavez

Eric Chavez will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder next week.
Chavez has tried again to rehab the shoulder, progressing to batting practice last week, but he's decided to give it up and try another surgery. There's now considerable doubt about whether he'll be able to make it back as a third baseman. The A's might use him at DH or first base next year.
Chavez is such a great athlete that I think he should be used at first instead of being a DH. He's 6'1" which is a good size and the A's can't afford to pay this guy all that money not to get in the game somehow. I hope Chavez can rebound and make his finals years something for the fans and himself to enjoy.

A great athlete and ballplayer who had one of the quickest falls off the radar. He should just retire

what? he's only 30 years old lol. The guy had 3 surgeries in the off-season. That is just a little difficult to come back from and be 100%. I have no doubt he'll be ready to play next season.

didn't realize you were a scout lol. I'm pretty sure he thinks otherwise and plenty of guys have come back from worse injuries. And plenty of guys have switched positions to prolong their career. He'll be back and once he's healed, he'll be hitting again.

    Re: More Surgery For Chavez

i'm not a scout, i'm going by production. and it's not just his injuries. let me show you:

    his best 2 seasons: '03 and '04
    '02: .275 average, 34 HR, 109 RBI's
    '03: .282 average, 29 HR, 101 RBI's

by 2006 (when he played 485 games, so he wasn't hurt with any seriousness):
    .241, 22 HR, 76 RBI's

then the injuries hit. in '07, he played a little over half a season (341 ab's):
    .240, 15 HR, 46 RBI's

he started to suck before the injuries, i don't see why he will be any good after the injuries.

15 HRs over half a season is right on track for his average 29 HRs. His production was right on track as well.

obviously, a player will start to decline in his 30s, but he's not retiring and suggesting that is hilarious. he'll be back and be productive as a hitter. he'll be done as a 3B, but he'll be back at 1B or DH.

    Re: More Surgery For Chavez

how can anyone make that statement when he hasn't played? If he sucks next year, then maybe I'd agree, but until he's back out there one can't make that statement with any real seriousness. That's why it's hilarious. It's hilarious that someone would suggest a ball player retire at 30 when he didn't have a career threatening injury. Plenty of guys stick around long after they're productive. He's young enough and many players have come back from that type of injury. If he was a pitcher, then I'd be more concerned.

    Re: More Surgery For Chavez

I could care less if he retires or plays again. I don't want him playing for the A's. He was never that good offensively. He defense was top notch he just can't hit. Take his defense away and what do you got? Jack Cust with less home runs thats what. Without him being a gold glover 3B he is useless to the A's. If Chavez is going to be a DH or a 1B he's no good to the A's. W/O his gold glove D at 3B he is no better than Richie Sexon. The A's should seriously think about releasing him.

Well we still have Chavvy signed for two more years, so I figure we should make the most of that and try to have him play at least one more season. Whether it be at 3B or at 1B or as a DH, I think his presence will really help the young guys on the team. I know it's extremely cliche and over-used, but I seriously think that he can help out the new kids a lot. He's been there and done that, plus he knows a thing or two about making a comeback. Give him another shot before completely giving up on him.

He sucked before the injuries what makes everybody think he can produce after his injuries?
