I don't know the entire story, but I'm sure he didn't want to go to KC...supposedly, he injured it in his last AB...he'll probably end up getting released. If that happens, we have to pay the rest of his salary. If he had gotten traded, then we were off the hook.

    Injury report

CLEVELAND -- The A's placed righty reliever Kiko Calero on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with shoulder inflammation, marking the 15th time this season they've used the DL. "Hopefully it'll be the last time," Oakland manager Bob Geren said before the opener of a four-game series against the host Indians at Jacobs Field. "You always have to think positive and say, 'That's it.'" That's probably overly optimistic, though. The A's used the DL 15 times total last season, and prior to the 21 days between the placement of outfielder Milton Bradley on the DL, on June 3, and the Calero move on Monday, the longest Oakland had gone without using the DL since Opening Day was 11 days (May 23-June 2). At its current rate, the club could very well match, if not shatter, its 1997 mark of using the DL 21 times. "Don't say that," Geren said. "We're killing the River Cats enough as it is." The Sacramento River Cats, Oakland's Triple-A team, feels the ripples of every move the A's make, and their transaction list for the year is almost comically long. On Monday, three more Cats were on the move between Sacramento and Oakland.

In addition to putting Calero on the DL, the A's optioned infielder Kevin Melillo to Sacramento and recalled pitchers Dallas Braden and Ruddy Lugo from the River Cats.
"It's crazy," said Melillo, who was called up on June 21 and got one at-bat during his three games with the A's. "I've only been gone three or four days, and I know when I get back [to Sacramento] there'll be three or four guys gone since I was there last week."
Geren said Braden, a lefty who made two starts for Oakland earlier this year, and Lugo, a righty, were brought in as relief reinforcements. Lugo was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on June 14 and made two appearances for the A's before being sent down June 18. "We're a little bit short in the bullpen," Geren said. "With [righty Rich] Harden kind of on a schedule, it's hard to count him as a reliever." Haren, who is working out of the bullpen in preparation for a return to the starting rotation, was expected to pitch two innings on Monday. Calero, who hasn't pitched since giving up three runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Cardinals on June 16, and has a 6.39 ERA this season, was placed on the DL retroactive to June 17, so he's eligible to be activated next Monday.

Dr. Bob: Sitting on the bench in the visitors' dugout, Geren unfolded his daily injury report from the athletic trainer and rattled off a series of medical updates.

Closer Huston Street (elbow) is still in Toronto receiving treatment from a specialist, and will meet the A's in New York on Thursday. There remains no timetable for his return to the active roster.

Designated hitter/catcher Mike Piazza (shoulder) is making good progress in his throwing program, from which he took Sunday off. He was scheduled to throw on Monday and Tuesday, take Wednesday off, and throw again on Thursday and Friday. He won't be activated until he's ready to get behind the plate, and Geren said, "I won't guess on that."

Righty reliever Justin Duchscherer (hip) was scheduled to play catch at 150 feet before Monday's game. If he gets up to 180 feet by the weekend, he might do some throwing on a bullpen mound ay Yankee Stadium.

Outfielder Bobby Kielty (calf) was scheduled to play in his first rehab game with Sacramento on Monday.

Outfielder Chris Snelling (knee) went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in a rehab game with Sacramento on Sunday. He was scheduled to play five innings on defense Monday

Am I the only one who thinks that this is crazy? It's just insane how often these guys are getting hurt. I do have to say that I am awfully proud to be an A's fan right now. They have 9 players on the DL, but have still managed to have a record better than .500. Not many teams can say that. Sure, they're 9 games back of the Angels, but even still you gotta be happy with how the A's have been able to win even with their regulars out. It's just amazing.

Calero has been really struggling this year. His slider doesn't have that sharp break on it like it used to. I think that he needs this time to gather himself back together so he can help the team.

Well, if they get Calero back to form and Street and Duchscherer come back and in form there bullpen will be back in shape.

All that needs to happen is for the A's offense to get hot. Then they'll be the team to beat.

And they do have the capable offense to get hot. With the likes of Johnson, Crosby, Chavez, Swisher, and now Cust. They have the bats to do it. I was just looking at the stats between the Angels and A's and I noticed that most of the Angels hitters are hitting close or over .300 while there are several A's swingers that are not hitting for average including Crosby,Johnson, Chavez, Kotsay and Kendall. They need to start picking it up.

What is up with y'all? All positions have become too much of a offensive position. People are overlooking what they're supposed to do. Haren wouldn't be the pitcher that he is now if he didn't throw his splitter, right? Well in order to throw a splitter and keep it effective, you have to have a catcher who can block it. Kendall does just that. Every pitcher on the A's has faith in Kendall that he will block as many pitches as he can. He is doing a fabulous job with the A's young pitching staff. He isn't getting enough credit for calling the games. He'll often catch a day game after a night game. IMO, he's the most underrated catcher out there. So he's not being the hitter that he was. I don't think that the A's signed him to be a huge hitter. They signed him to catch, and so far, he's doing a great job.

Evidently, Bradley was traded to SD. At least we save about $2 mil on the deal.

well shit, I was wrong about Snelling coming back any time soon...he was transfered to the 60 day DL today. Lugo was sent back to AAA (just cut him already...he's terrible). Murphy was recalled again. And Dee Brown was called up from AAA as well. We've used the DL 16 times now this season...after using it 15 times last season.
