    Prospects to watch in 2007

This thread will be place to talk about how some of our prospects are doing. Last season I updated threads weekly with current stats for the prospects. I'll probably do something similar. Here is a list of some of the players we'll be watching this year and where they are starting this season:

    SP Dan Meyer AAA
    1B/DH Daric Barton AAA
    C Kurt Suzuki AAA
    2B Kevin Melillo AAA
    C Landon Powell AA
    CF Javier Herrera Advanced A
    2B Cliff Pennington Advanced A
    OF Travis Buck MLB
    SP Craig Italiano ??
    SP Vincent Mazzaro Advanced A
    SP Jared Lansford Advanced A
    OF Brian Stavisky AAA
    OF Richie Robnett AA
    OF Danny Putnam AA
    3B Jeffrey Baisley AA
    3B Vasili Spanos AA

More players will be added once the season gets started as this list doesn't include players who were drafted last season.

What about the remaining big names from the 2002 Moneyball draft: Ben Fritz, John McCurdy, Jeremy Brown, and Brant Colamarino?

I don't really consider them prospects anymore...Colamarino was at AA last season. I don't remember him even being mentioned in the book. Brown was at AAA. I'm not sure, and don't really care, about the other two. I think Fritz was hurt badly his first year...unless I'm thinking of Brad Sullivan. At any rate, they're not really prospects...and yes, I know you were asking rhetorically in all likelihood.

Oh, Colamarino was mentioned. At the time he was drafted, DePodesta said he "might be the best hitter in the country."

Does anyone know what happened to Craig "Chicken" Italiano? I can find him on any of the rosters. I can only guess he might still be injured from last season and they might stick him in Vancouver or AZL once he's healed later in the season.

RF Jermaine Mitchell is doing alright for Kane County (OPS .702). SP Scott Deal (ERA 5.73) and LF Matt Sulentic are not doing so well (OPS .402).

For Midland RF Putnam (OPS 1.001), 2B Snyder (OPS .957), 3B Spanos (OPS .831), and 3B Baisley (OPS .793) are hitting well. SP Fritz (4 - 1, 3.49 ERA) and SP Madesn (3 - 0, 1.75 ERA) are pitching well.

For Sacramento 1B Barton (OPS .715) is not hitting as well as he should be. C Suzuki (OPS .727) is also not doing as well as he should be. No one is lighting it up on the mound right now...

Barton is hitting .500 this month!

The Official Site of The Oakland Athletics: News: Oakland Athletics News

"He's not just getting one hit, either," Oakland manager Bob Geren said before the third game of a four-game series at Jacobs Field. "He's on fire. Hot. Smoking. En fuego."

Clearly, Geren has been keeping tabs on Barton, who saw his 10-game multihit streak come to an end Tuesday but still finished the game batting .500 (45-for-90) for the month of June and .331 overall, with a .429 on-base percentage.

"I've been hearing from a lot of people about him," Geren said of Barton, who turns 22 in August. "He's on an incredible clip."
overall he has a 21 game hitting streak.

He seems like a great guy (Barton). And man was he on fire! He's just knocking on the ML door, waiting for a guy like Johnson *cough cough* to go down or something. If if doesn't happen this year, I think that maybe in the next couple of years he could be with the A's and possibly even be a regular.
