    Yanks Sign Ensberg

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Yankees have agreed to terms with infielder Morgan Ensberg on a one-year contract.
Ensberg has played primarily third base during his career, but with Alex Rodriguez not going anywhere he'll get a chance to compete with Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit for playing time at first base. Ensberg struggled last season and was non-tendered by the Padres, but has significant power and would make a nice platoon starter against left-handed pitching.
I guess Betemit didn't blow their hair back. Decent signing for the Yanks and Ensberg can help DH every now and then. I expect him to be traded at some point in '08.

Good, another low average, mediocre power, who knows defense guy.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

Ensberg is actually a useful guy to throw into the 1B mix.

Not a bad move, IMO. Ensberg is low-risk, with fair potential. The Yankees didn't overspend to get him into camp.

I remember that one year Ensberg had a few years ago with the Astros where he absolutely tore up Fantasy stats. He was a monster out of nowhere, and then he just vanished again. Too bad for him. This is a decent signing, no doubt. He would actually be good trade bait, I like the idea.

my big question in why did they let Mientkiewicz go, he was ridiculous at defense, which is something giambi and duncan lack at (giambi more than duncan) and although he had a horendus offensive start, he really turned it around after his injury. i think they should have kept him and they wouldn't even need ensberg

I don't disagree with that. I watched Mientkiewicz play for several years with the Twins and think he can still play defense with the best of them. His back problems appear to be solved, although once a corner infielder has back problems, they frequently come back.
Doug will catch on with someone.

Since when have Yankee veteran players become trade bait?

But in that case, Dan Evans loves him some pinch hitting third basemen, so maybe the Mariners will be come calling by July.
